One Variable Statistics on the TI-36
Suppose you wanted to find the one variable statistics such as the mean, the variance, and the
standard deviation for the weights of the LB for the 1994 Purdue Football Team.
Those weights as given in class are:
225 224 231 231 225 223 225 215
To get the mean, variance, and standard deviation from the calculator we need to get data
into the calculator; which means we first need to get the calculator in the statistics mode…
Entering the One Variable Statistics Mode
To enter the one variable statistics mode
Press [3rd] [Stat 1]
You should now notice STAT appears at the top of your display
(above the numbers).
Clear any data that was previously entered.
Press [2nd] [CSR]
You want to do this whenever you are starting a new problem
so that the calculator will clear away the old data you entered.
Entering Data Into the Calculator
To enter the data
225 224 231 231 225 223 225 215
Type the value you want to enter
225
Press
+
After you press this key a “1” appears on the display to let you
know you have entered the first data point.
Type the next value you want to enter
224
Press
+
After you press this key a “2” appears on the display to let you
know you have entered the second data point.
…
Continue in this manner until all the data points have been entered.
When you are done, the display should show an “8” to let you
know that you have entered eight data points.
Correcting Data That May Have Been Entered Erroneously
If in the course of keying in values you enter one in by mistake, like typing 25 instead of 215
you can correct this as follows
Key in 25 and Press
−
This will immediately remove 25 from the total of the numbers
you have entered. When you do this, the number of entries
displayed on your screen will decrease by one indicating that you
have removed an entry.
Then you want to key in the correct entry 215, so
Key in 215 and Press
−
This will add 215 to the total of the entries you are entering. When
you do this, the number of entries displayed on your screen will
increase by one indicating that you have added an entry.
Computing the sample mean x , the sample standard deviation s 2 , and the sample variance s .
Press [2nd] [x ]
Press [2nd] [σ x n − 1]
[ ]
Press x 2
This will give you the sample mean. If you entered the 8 numbers
for the LB’s from above, you should get 224.875
This will give you the sample standard deviation of approximately
5.03
This will give you the sample variance (ie., the square of the
standard deviation is the variance, or the square root of the
variance is the standard deviation).
