Bone cells are called ________
Skeletal System
Bone cells are called osteocytes.
Skeletal System
Human babies have more than 300 bones
at birth but by the time they reach
adulthood there are only 206 bones
because some have fused together.
 The bones of our hands and feet account
for half of our total number of bones!
 One person in twenty is born with an extra
rib. This is three times more likely to
occur in males.

There are ________
muscles in your body!
move
Function: to ________
the body and internal organs
2 Types of Muscle:
Voluntary
– 1. _____________
- under your control
Involuntary
– 2. _____________
- not under your control
3 Types of Muscle Tissue:
Cardiac
– 1. ___________
- found only in the heart
- voluntary or involuntary?
tendons
Skeletal
– 2. ___________
- attached to bones with __________
ligaments
- attached to other muscles with ___________
- work in pairs, when one muscle _________
contracts the
other _________
relaxes to its original length
- voluntary or involuntary
Smooth
– 3. ___________
- work automatically to control certain movements
inside your body
- found inside internal organs including the
stomach and blood vessels
________
- voluntary or involuntary?
Muscular System
There are about 60 muscles in the face. Smiling
is easier than frowning – smiling uses 20 muscles
and frowning uses 40 muscles!
 The longest muscles in the body is the sartorius,
from the outside of the hip down and across to
the inside of the knee. It rotates the thigh
outwards and bends the knee.
 The smallest muscle in the body is the stapedius,
deep in the ear. It is only 5 mm long and
thinner than a cotton thread. It is involved in
hearing.
 The biggest muscle in the body is the gluteus
maximus, in the buttock. It pulls the leg
backwards powerfully for walking, running and
climbing steps.
