Library Focus on Resources for Vaccines and Infectious Disease
In recognition of National Vaccination Awareness Month, the CRDAMC Medical Library would like to bring to your attention
some resources for vaccines and infectious disease.
The venerable Vaccines by Plotkin is available both online and in print. The 2008 edition is in the AMEDD Virtual Library’s
MDConsult collection, and the 2004 edition is available for checkout in print. The sixth edition is due to be released by the
publisher 15 September 2012. We hope to have it on our shelves in the near future. Other library titles of note include
Atlas of sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, Saunders/Elsevier, 2010.

The Clinics of North America series features a number of recent vaccination themed issues. For example,
Nursing Clinics of North America September 2009: Human Papillomavirus and the HPV Vaccine: are the benefits
worth the risk?
Infectious Disease Clinics of North America June 2009: Meta-analyses on pediatric infections and vaccines.
Other recent topics covered in various Clinics titles include HIV vaccine efficacy trials, cancer vaccines, HPV, tuberculosis, allergies
and the use of vaccines in older adults and indigenous populations. The Clinics series titles are provided in the MD Consult database;
many titles are available online from 1995 to present.
OTHER ONLINE RESOURCES:
Those concerned with vaccination as a matter of travel medicine will want to explore Travax EnCompass, accessible through the
AMEDD Virtual Library. Travax EnCompas is FOUO and may only be accessed from a “dot mil” domain. Travax EnCompass is described as providing “concise summaries of health and safety concerns and necessary preventive measures, including immunizations
and malaria chemoprophylaxis, for each of 230 countries.”
MilVax: http://www.vaccines.mil/ The Military Vaccine Agency’s website provides a number of helpful resources. The tab labeled
“Quick Reference” provides a chart that links to DoD and service-specific policies and service messages, vaccine information statements from the CDC and vaccination recommendations by region. According to the site’s security and privacy notice information,
“Information presented on the MILVAX Web site is considered public information and may be distributed or copied unless otherwise
specified.”

The section on Requirements & Laws gives school entry requirements by state, information on vaccine exemption, a link to a database
of state laws for vaccines and more. The Special Groups of People section has information on vaccines during pregnancy, vaccines
for people with specific diseases or conditions and patient education material in English and in Spanish.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find a variety of high-quality printable posters, brochures and booklets such as the Immunization and Pregnancy decision chart or the English and Spanish language patient education flyers on pertussis or vaccine safety.

CAE VIMEDIX Ultrasound Trainer
The Simulation Lab has a new
addition to our inventory of
simulation and training products; Canadian Aviation Electronics (CAE) has produced
the VIMEDIX Ultrasound (US)
Training Simulator. This virtual
simulator has the following applications which are comparable to US machines currently in
use that include:

As a training tool the VIMEDIX
