MERSEY DEANERY
SPECIALTY TRAINING PROGRAMME AT ST3 LEVEL
ACADEMIC CLINICAL FELLOW IN
GASTROENTEROLOGY
PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
• Job title
Academic Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology (ST3 level)
Duration of post, and what happens at the end of the post if candidate
successful or unsuccessful in obtaining a research fellowship
The ACF post will be for up to 3 years and during this time the fellow will be expected to
apply to an external funding agency such as MRC, Wellcome Trust or CORE for a Clinical
Research Training Fellowship. If successful in obtaining such a fellowship, the postholder
will study for a PhD and then potentially progress to the Clinical Lecturer post that is also
available in this specialty in Mersey deanery. If applications for a Clinical Research Training
Fellowship or any alternative source of funding to complete a PhD are unsuccessful, the
postholder will transfer to the clinical higher specialist training scheme in Gastroenterology,
as long as clinical aspects of training are progressing satisfactorily (as monitored by ARCPs
etc).
•
• Hospitals in which training will take place
Clinical training during the 3 year ACF component will take place predominantly at Royal
Liverpool and Broadgreen University University Hospitals NHS Trust. Clinical training during
the later stages of specialist training (post ACF) will also take place at other hospitals within
the Mersey deanery.
• Research institutions in which training will take place
University of Liverpool (Department of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Institute of
Translational Medicine).
• Whether day release or block release will be used for protected research time
This is flexible and will depend on the type of research that the ACF will conduct and the
specific training needs of the individual.
• Description of research component of programme (minimum 250 words)
Gastroenterology research at the University of Liverpool concentrates on luminal diseases,
particularly infections, inflammatory bowel diseases and gastrointestinal cancers. It is
envisaged that the ACF will develop a research project that will investigate a topic related to
the above subject areas. He/she will also have the opportunity to interact with the NIHRfunded Biomedical Research Centre in Microbial Disease at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen
University Hospitals NHS Trust. Research projects will be supervised by one of the
academic clinicians in the Gastroenterology division (Prof DM Pritchard, Prof JM Rhodes, or
Dr M Gordon) and potentially co-supervised by one of the non-clinical academic staff in the
unit (Dr B Campbell, Dr LG Yu, Dr J Jenkins or TBA). Examples of potential areas of
research include the role of E.coli in Crohn’s disease (Prof Rhodes), H. pylori associated
gastric carcinogenesis (Prof Pritchard) and Salmonella infection (particularly in association
with HIV in the tropics, Dr Gordon). The Unit has expertise in several different research
methodologies and the project might therefore involve basic science, animal models or
human clinical studies depending on the successful candidate, supervisor and project. The
unit has a past record of successful applications for Clinical Research Fellowships from both
the MRC and Wellcome Trust and publishes in Gastroenterology, Cancer Research, Journal
of Biological Chemistry, Clinical Infectious Diseases and GUT and other well respected
gastroenterology, infectious diseases and cell biology journals. The unit works in recently
refurbished and well equipped laboratories that includes a flow cytometer, confocal
microscopy and a category 3 containment laboratory as well as all standard molecular and
cellular biology techniques. The unit regularly used the Universities facilities for DNA array
and proteomic analysis as well as electron microscopy.
• Description of clinical training component of programme (minimum 250 words)
Clinical training will take place predominantly at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University
University Hospitals NHS Trust. The Gastroenterology directorate (Clinical director Dr K
Leiper) has 15 medical consultants (including 4 clinical academics), 3 nurse consultants, a
full complement of Specialist registrars, junior medical staff and specialist nurses and is
responsible for inpatients on 2 wards. Training opportunities are available in all aspects of
inpatient and outpatient luminal and hepatobiliary gastroenterology. There are specialist
clinics in inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease and MDTs for all types of GI cancer.
The hospital houses one of the largest endoscopy units in the UK and provides the whole
range of basic and advanced endoscopic techniques (including EUS, ERCP and capsule
enteroscopy) as well as being a bowel cancer screening centre. The hospital also houses
the Mersey School of Endoscopy (one of only 3 national endoscopy training centres) which
provides regular training courses. Training opportunities in general internal medicine are also
provided and there will be on call commitments to both general internal medicine and
gastroenterology.
