OS X El Capitan System Requirements
With an emphasis on performance and reliability, OS X El Capitan is a great system
software update for Mac users. Of course, updating to the next version of Mac OS X will
only be possible if the Mac hardware supports the new version. Fortunately for those
wanting to update to OS X El Capitan, the system requirements are quite forgiving, and
basically if your Mac can run OS X Yosemite or OS X Mavericks, it will almost certainly be
able to run OS X El Capitan as well.
A common thread is the Mac must have a 64-bit CPU, which is typically an Intel Core 2
Duo or newer processor. Beyond that, the requirements are pretty soft and forgiving. You’ll
also need a few GB of available disk space to install the final version on your Mac, which is
typical for updating any system software.

Split View
Running lots of apps at the same time is one of the great things about using a Mac.
Focusing on just one app in full-screen view is another. With Split View, you get the best of
both. It automatically fills your screen with the two apps you choose. So you can make
dinner plans with a friend in Messages while finding the restaurant in Maps. Or work on a
document in Pages while doing your research in Safari. All without the distraction of your
other open apps, and without having to manually resize and drag windows around. And
your desktop is always just a swipe away, so it’s easy to get back to everything else you
were doing.
Mission Control
El Capitan will feature a number of changes and enhancements to the existing Mission
Control feature and app window behaviors. These changes include updated gestures, popovers, and more. For instance, Mission Control can now be opened by a three-finger
swipe up to show you all of your open applications.

Call out your cursor.
Lost your cursor on your crowded desktop? Just shake your finger back and forth on
the trackpad or give your mouse a shake, and the cursor gets bigger so it’s easy to
spot.
Spotlight
Spotlight gets even smarter in El Capitan, delivering results for weather, sports, stocks,
web video, and transit information. And now you can ask Spotlight to find a file using
natural language – so when you’re looking for something, just type it the way you’d
say it. Spotlight is also more flexible: You can resize its window to see more results
and move it anywhere on your desktop.

Mail
OS X El Capitan Enhancements
Improved full-screen support and swipe gestures in Mail let you make quick work of your
correspondence. OS X even helps you manage your calendar and keep your contacts up to date,
right from your inbox. Work more easily in full screen. The enhanced full-screen view in Mail lets
you juggle all your email conversations at the same time. The email message you’re composing
now slides to the bottom of the screen, so you can access your inbox — perfect for copying text
or attachments between messages. And if you’re managing multiple email threads, you can switch
between them with easy-to-use tabs
Notes
The powerful new Notes app is more than a great way to jot down a quick thought and keep
track of it for later. Now you can turn a list into a checklist in a snap. Or easily add a photo, video,
URL, or map location to a note. And thanks to iCloud, all your notes and everything in them are
kept up to date across all your devices. So you can create a note on your Mac and check it on
your iPhone when you’re out and about.

Photos
OS X El Capitan supports third-party tools that will be available from the Mac App Store
and accessible right in the Photos app. Use multiple editing extensions from your favorite
developers on a single photo, or use a mix of extensions and the editing tools built into
Photos. From adding subtle filters to using beautiful texture effects, you can take your
photo editing to a whole new level. For extensions listed on Apple App Store click here.
Safari
With OS X El Capitan, the best browser for your Mac brings new tools for better surfing.
Now Safari lets you keep favorite websites open and accessible with Pinned Sites. You can
quickly mute audio without hunting for the tab it’s coming from. And use AirPlay to stream
video from a web page to your HDTV.

Maps
Now arriving. Public transit info. If you get around by train or bus, you can now get around more
easily in select cities around the world thanks to Maps. You’ll find everything you need to go from
point A to point B, including built-in public transportation maps, directions, and schedules.
Improved Language Support
Mac becomes even more fluent. New system fonts and improved input methods make Chinese
and Japanese text more beautiful to read and easier to write on a Mac

One of the major performance enhancements in El Capitan comes in the form of the adoption of Apple's core graphics
technology, Metal. Metal was first introduced with iOS 8, and in El Capitan it combines OpenGL and OpenCL under a single API.
With Metal, the amount of work the CPU needs to do to render graphical effects is reduced, offloading tasks to the GPU. With
Metal, Apple says system-level graphics rendering is 40 percent more efficient and 50 percent faster. This translates to better
performance from graphics intensive apps and Metal also brings some significant enhancements to games. It improves draw call
performance by up to 10x, which could lead to more realism and detail in future titles. Metal is supported by most 2012 Macs and
newer.

Preparing Your Mac to Install El Capitan
Find out if your Mac will be able to run
OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
This one is a biggy. If your Mac can’t run OS X 10.11 (El
Capitan) there’s no new software update for you. Don’t
panic, though, Apple has kept the list of supported Macs
the same as the supported Macs for OS X Mavericks
(10.9) and OS X Yosemite (10.10), so if you are running
either of those OS X versions you’ll be able to get El
Capitan. There is a list of supported Macs in an earlier
slide in this presentation. Check the specs of your
system by clicking on the Apple icon on the top left of
your screen and selecting About This Mac.

Make Sure You Have Sufficient RAM to Run OS X 10.11
If your Mac is on the list of supported machines, it’s likely you won’t run into any problems, but it’s worth checking that you also have enough
RAM to run OS X El Capitan. Apple says you’ll need at least 4GB of RAM, although 8GB is advisable. If you have less the 4GB RAM it might be
time to consider upgrading to a new Mac or installing more RAM – if you decide to do that, make sure the RAM you choose is compatible.

Make Sure You Have Enough Disk Space for OS X 10.11
Apple suggests that you should have 8GB of free space on
your Mac’s drive before you install a major OS X update, but
it is recommended aiming for 15GB to 20GB. You will need to
allow some room for temporary files. El Capitan is 6 GB.

Get access to the Mac App Store
If you are still running Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) and don’t have access to the Mac App Store you really need to
upgrade! The next version of OS X will be available only via the Mac App Store and the Mac App Store arrived in Mac
OS X Snow Leopard (10.6). Luckily you can still get hold of a copy of Snow leopard ($25) from Apple. They will send
you a link from which you can download Snow Leopard.

Update Your Third Party Apps and Printer Drivers
Make sure you have updated any third party apps too. Those updates may include changes that are required for upgrading
to El Capitan and if you don’t run the updates they may not work properly once you have updated.
To update apps you’ve bought from the
Mac App Store, launch the App Store app
and check the Updates button in the
toolbar. Then click Update All, simply
providing you Apple ID and passwrod
when prompted.
For apps that you purchased elsewhere
you’ll need to manually install updates. You
can check if there are updates available
from the application’s menu, in Microsoft
Word, for example, it’s case a of clicking
on Help>Check for Updates.
Check compatibility of your printer drivers
with your new operating system. This
means you may have to go to the printer
manufacturer’s website and download the
latest driver(s) which are supported by
the new operating system.

Preparing Your Mac to Install El Capitan
Ditch Really Old Software
If you are still running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), you may still be using a few PowerPC programs – software that was
never updated to run natively on Macs with Intel processors. Apple used to provide software called Rosetta that
translated PowerPC code so it could run on Intel macs. When Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) launched Rosetta was no
longer installed by default, but it was possible to download and install Rosetta if you wanted to run a PowerPC program.
However, Apple killed Rosetta completely when OS X Lion (10.7) was released, and it remains unavailable to this day.
Any PowerPC apps you have won’t work when you update your system, so you’ll either need to ditch them and find
alternatives, or stay in the dark ages and run very old software.
To find out if any of your applications are PowerPC programs, launch Snow Leopard’s System Profiler Utility (in /
Applications/Utilities), select Applications (under Software in the sidebar), and then click the kind column header, which
sorts the list of applications by processor types. Any programs listed as PowerPC will not work under El Capitan, they
won’t even work under Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite.

Make Sure Your Mac Is Healthy
You should make sure that your Mac is completely healthy
before installing a big update to the system. Open Disk
Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), select your startup drive
from the list on the left, click the First Aid tab to the right,
and then click Verify Disk. If Disk Utility finds problems, you’ll
need to boot from a different volume to perform the actual
repairs using the Repair Disk button.
Boot into recovery mode (by holding down Command-R at
startup) and use Disk Utility from there to perform the
recommended repairs. Or, you can boot from a CD
containing a third party utility program like Tech Tool Protogo,
Disk Warrior, and Data Rescue 3.

Back up your Mac
Before updating to OS X 10.11 it is recommended the you back up your Mac, and test that the back up works before
you do anything else. You can use Apple’s Time Machine to create a back up that will recover your Mac exactly the way
you left it prior to the install, but alternatives include Super Duper, or Carbon Copy Cloner both of which will create a
bootable clone backup of your Mac.

Set up iCloud
When you install OS X 10.11 you are likely to be asked for your iCloud details because these days iCloud is heavily into
many apps and system services. Make sure you are logged into iCloud and enable syncing before you start updating and
things should go smoothly.

Troubleshooting !
In the event your Mac is acting quirky here are some troubleshooting
techniques you can try. Be sure you read and follow the procedures as
outlined in the Apple support pages whose links are provided below.
Reset PRAM or NVRAM
•
•
•
•
Speaker volume
Screen resolution
Startup disk selection
Recent kernel panic information, if any
Startup in Safe Mode
• Verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts • Deletes font caches, Kernel cache and other system cache files
Together, these changes can help resolve or isolate issues related to your startup disk. Reset SMC (System Management Controller)
You should only do an SMC reset after you've tried all other standard troubleshooting. Try each of the following steps in this
order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to see if the issue still occurs.
Fans, Lights, Power, System performance, Video, Port Illumination
