CHAPTER 4
ld people feel really
bad when young
people die! Old
people like to see
young people being happy
and successful in life and so
they feel very sad when a
young person dies before
them.
O
But death comes to all of us!
Even the Prophets of God
died and returned back to
God.
In this chapter you will learn about all this.
But there is nothing to be afraid of because dying is the end
of one stage and the beginning of other!

LESSON 1
WHEN DEATH COMES
1.1 RETURN TO ALLAH
We all have to die one day! Some people die young while others die in their old
ages. Sometimes a child can even die while it is still in the stomach of his or her
mother.
Islam says that death is when the soul will 'Return to Allah.' A good Muslim is
happy when he or she returns to Allah but all his or her friends and relatives are
sad because they miss his or her goodness on the earth.
When a person dies we should pray for that person and remember the goodness of
that person. We should also remember that one day we too will die. We should say:
`We come from Allah and to Him is our return.'
By remembering the dead we keep alive their memory! This is a good thing! So we
should not forget our close relatives and friends who have died!
1.2 DEATH OF THE BODY
A person who has died may have suffered an illness or may have died in an
accident. Sometimes a person can die suddenly! Nobody knows how and when he
or she will die.
When a person dies the following happens:
1. Breathing Stops
2. Body will remain still
3. Heart beat will stop
4. The body will get cold
It is said that people die only when their time on the earth is over and Allah wants
them to return to Him. We must remember that it is Allah who gave us the blessing
of life and it is Allah who decides to take life away from us.

1.3 DEAD BODY IS 'NAJIS'
You may know that when a baby is born it is covered in a red liquid that looks like
blood. This liquid is very unclean and makes the baby 'najis'. So the baby has to be
washed properly with great care. Islam says that when a person dies he or she
again becomes unclean and also needs to be washed so that he can return back to
Allah. The wash of a dead body is called Gusal E Mayat.
1.4 WHAT ABOUT PROPHETS
You cannot say that any Prophet had died. You should say: 'They returned to
Allah.' It is wrong to say that they died because their goodness will remain on the
earth forever.
When the Prophet Muhammad returned to Allah it was Hazrat Ali who gave him
Gusal E Mayat. Hazrat Ali said: `I washed the Prophet's body so as to say farewell
to him. There was a sweet fragrance coming from him. There was never born
anybody like him nor will there ever be anybody like him.'
1.5 THE BRIDGE
The Qur'an says that all living things will die and return to Allah. Some people say
that death is like crossing a bridge from this world to a next world. The bridge will
take us away from the life of the body to the life of the soul! Some people say that
those who are good will be happy to cross this bridge but those who are bad will
not be happy!
SOUL
BODY
1.6 WISHING FOR DEATH
Some people think that death is easy but Islam says that we have to be careful of
death just as we are careful of our exams at school. We should prepare for death by
doing good things on the earth. But we should never wish for death because it
Primary 5 Book 2
Page 50
means that we do not want to do good any more on the earth. People who wish for
death do not fully understand how important life is. Such people should change the
way they live and not take an easy way out by wishing for death.
The Prophet Muhammad said a very
beautiful thing about this life. He said:
''This life is like a garden whose fruits we
will get in the next world.''
This means that this life is for good
deeds and hard work.
Remember the stories we did about the
people of Aad and Thamud! They only
valued life if they were rich and
beautiful. But they wished for death if
they lost their wealth and beauty!
“This life is a garden to
grow the fruits for the
next life!”
Islam teaches us that we should value our lives because we have a chance to do
good deeds and work hard.
1.7 PROPHET NUH
Prophet Nuh is said to have lived a very long life. But when the time for his death
came he became sad. He said to Allah that he wanted to live for a few moments
more so that he could walk away from the hot Sun and go under the shade of a tree.
When he got to the shade the death began to come. He said: ‘Today I have leant
how precious life is! Now that I am dying I wish I could live longer to do more
good deeds and hard work.’
We should learn from this by valuing the things we do in our lives. Allah has given
us life on this earth as his blessing. We should not spoil our lives nor should we
spoil it for others. Then when death comes to us we will be sure to taste the good
fruits of our lives in heaven.
Those people who do not believe in God often forget the true value of this life.
They do not feed their souls by good deeds and hard work. They lead a life like the
people of Aad and Thamud. They only think of Power, Prestige and Pleasure.!
DO NOT SPOIL YOUR LIFE &
DO NOT SPOIL IT FOR OTHERS!

LESSON 2
WHAT THE SOUL SEES
2.1 SEEING HEAVEN
Just before a person dies he or she sees an angel called the Angel of Death. This
angel's real name is Ezraeel. Only a person who is about to die can see him.
Nobody else can see him. When a person sees him then he or she cannot talk or do
anything except stare.
The angel of death comes with a smiling face if the soul is that of a good person.
The angel says: `Allah is well pleased with you and has kept a reward for you in
paradise.' The soul sees the door of paradise with all it's beauty. At that instant the
angel tells the soul to come out of the body and immediately the soul comes out
and the person's body dies. The body stops breathing and soon goes cold.
The angel takes the soul to a beautiful place where it lives with other good souls.
This place of souls is called Barzak. This is a place where souls go to before they
enter paradise. Here all the good souls of the past come together. They greet each
other and they live happily. Here in Barzak they also get news of what is
happening on the earth. They hear about their families, their friends and about what
they left behind on the earth. The life is barzak will be like a dream! Sometimes in
our sleep we get a beautiful dream! The souls in barzak will be as though they are
having a beautiful dream.
2.2
THE
JUDGEMENT
DAY
OF
Then a special day will come called The
Day of Judgment. It is the final day when
the souls will leave barzak and enter in to
their bodies again. The bodies will become
alive and come out of their resting places.
The Day of Judgment is also called
Qayamat. It is the day when the good
people will walk to go to heaven to join the Prophets. As the people will walk
towards heaven they will see their bodies becoming new and beautiful.
Such will be their beauty that they will
be very happy. Then as they enter heaven

The Good People will

Kawsar
2 Pageof 55
a voice will say: 'Allah wishes you peace. Welcome to Jannah the home of peace.’
Jannah is the name of heaven.
In heaven they will drink sweet drinks from the fountain of Kawsar. This is a
fountain given by Allah to Prophet Muhammad and is the fountain of life. Only
those who follow the truth and love the Prophet Muhammad and his family will be
able to drink from this fountain.
2.2 STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN
The Qur'an says that some souls will go
straight to heaven without going to Barzak.
These are the souls of Prophets, babies, the
true Imams(leaders) of Islam, scholars of
Islam and Martyrs. Martyrs are those people
who obey Allah and give their lives for
justice.
In Islam a dead person is called MARHUM.
This word gives respect to the dead person.
The martyrs who have given their lives for Islam are given a more special title of
Shaheed.
2.3 WHAT ABOUT BAD SOULS
Evil people who commit murder will not enter heaven. One such person was
Feron! These kind of evil doers killed innocent people and made fun of Allah's
religion. When they were told the truth they turned their backs and made excuses
not to follow it. When they die their souls will not have peace. The angel of death
will carry their souls to a horrible place called Jahanum which is hell. They will
be told: 'You deserve this because you were oppressors. You showed no mercy to
people and you did not heed towards the truth!’
2.4 THE UNLUCKY
The Qur'an says that when bad souls are dragged in to hell they will look up in to
heaven and say: 'How unlucky we are that we have not got the heavens.' The
angels will say: 'Do not blame your luck, but blame the evil things you did on the
earth.'
“DO NOT BLAME YOUR LUCK! BLAME YOUR DEEDS!”
Primary 5 Book 2
Page 56
2.5 ONLY ALLAH'S DECISION
Before Prophet Muhammad came there were people who would say: ‘We can get
you to heaven by giving you forgiveness. We have the power to forgive and we
can say who will enter in to heaven and who will not!' The Qur'an says that these
people were lying. The Qur’an asks these people: ' How can you lot forgive others
when you cannot forgive your own sins!'
These people also used to say that babies and infants will not go to heaven unless
they were forgiven by them first. The Prophet Muhammad said: 'All babies and
infants are innocent. They do not need your forgiveness. If they die they will enter
heaven, and it does not matter whether they are born in a Muslim family or not!'
One of the most beautiful things about Islam is that it teaches that all children are
born good, even if they are not born in a Muslim family. Only Islam teaches this
and says NO, NO, NO to
those who say that
children are born in sin.
Islam says that all children
are born good no matter
what religion they are born
in to. If children die in an
accident or in an illness
then they will enter heaven
just like the martyrs do.
Today every religion has
began to say what the
Prophet said. The truth of
the Prophet Muhammad is
therefore becoming
acceptable to everybody!
ALL BABIES WILL ENTER
HEAVEN!

LESSON 3
ATTENDING A FUNERAL
3.1 CRYING AT FUNERALS
It is natural to cry at funerals as it shows that
you are going to miss the person who has
died. But Islam says that you should
remember that even Prophets have died.
You should try to be strong and try to
control yourself. Islam says that you can cry
as it helps you to deal with the situation but you need to keep remembering that we
all come from Allah and to him we shall all return. By remembering this we can
feel better because we know that one day we will meet the person again in Barzak.
Whenever we lose someone we love we need to allow ourselves the right to cry
and grieve over this special person. By grieving we are saying: ‘We love you, miss
you and wish to have you to come back in to our arms!’ Grieving also helps us to
say ‘goodbye’ and to accept that Allah has called the person back to him.
Crying and feeling sad is therefore a great help. It helps us to adjust our lives.
Without proper grieving we ‘bottle up’ our grief inside us. This can be bad for us!
But every time we feel sad we need to remember that the person who has died has
gone to a better place and that we too will follow.
3.2 WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO THE DEAD BODY
Islam says that a dead body should be treated with respect because it is now the
property of Allah. So immediately after a person dies it's face is turned towards the
Kaaba.
After that the body is taken to a clean place where it is given Gusal E Mayat. It is
then dressed in a shroud. The special name for
the shroud of a dead person is Kafan.
You should not be
The kafan is pieces of white cloth used to dress
the dead body. All dead people whether rich,
poor, men, women, old, young, kings or beggars
are all given Gusal E Mayat and a white Kafan.
No jewellery or marks are allowed to be put on
the dead person.

afraid to cry at
funerals but you
need to remember
that we will all
return to Allah
sooner or later!
Page 60
A special prayer called Namaz E Janaza is then said. Then all the close relatives
come to see the face of the dead person for the last time. At this time it is hard for
them as they know that they will not see the person again until they meet in
Barzak. It is like saying goodbye to a person who is going on a long journey and
never returning back.
3.3 GOING TO SEE THE FAMILY
The Prophet Muhammad said that Muslims should comfort each other in times of
sadness. So when you see the relatives feeling sad you should comfort and pray for
them to have patients. Even if they are your enemies you should still wish them
well and be soft hearted towards them.
The family of the dead person needs to be comforted but not imposed upon. This
means that if you go to the home of the dead person then do not expect a party!
Do not sit there for too long. Go at a time when it is suitable for the family!
Try not to join in with those people who are cracking jokes at sad times.
DO NOT MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR THE FAMILY.
SHOW KINDNESS AND UNDERSTANDING!
To the members of the family say things like: 'May Allah give him Janaat.' 'May
Allah give you patience.' Try to give strength to the family. Also offer to help the
family and be at your best behaviour. It is also very good to recite the Qur'an.
Show sympathy but do not overdo it as it can give more grief to the family. Do not
create a bedlam and do not stay for too long at the home of the dead person as it
can cause the relatives much inconvenience.
3.4 TO THE GRAVEYARD
Islam says that it is better that men carry the body to the graveyard. They should
recite Kalema as they go to the graveyard. The women should watch the men,
walk behind the men or stay behind in the mosque or at home and pray for the dead
person until the men return from the graveyard. However, if a woman wants to go
to the funeral she is allowed to do so and nobody should stop her!
Primary 5 Book 2
Page 61
In the graveyard the body is placed near the
grave. First a prayer is recited. Then the body is
lowered into the grave and the grave filled with
earth until it is completely covered. Then water
is sprinkled on the grave. This is because Islam
teaches that water makes life and it takes away
sadness.
It is like watering a garden!
By putting water on the grave we have to
remember that we have now given the dead person back to Allah and we should try
not to be sad any longer. We should remember that the person has gone to Barzak
where he or she will live with other good souls.
Some people say that watering a grave is like watering the garden. A tree gives us
good fruit while the dead person gives us good memories and good examples of
life.
3.5 SAYING FATIHA
After water is sprinkled on the grave a prayer called Fatiha is said . In it you have
to recite Sura Al Hamd, Sura Al Ikhlas and Sura Inna Anzalna. All these are in the
Qur'an. After that everybody goes home or goes to the mosque.
It is said that when you
have recited Fatiha your
name is included among
the well wishers of the
dead person. After reciting
Fatiha you should say: 'O
Lord forgive this dead
person, set rights his
affairs and give patience to
his loved ones.' You can
keep saying this prayer as
many times as you want
and every time you go to
the grave of the person.

LESSON 4
THE DAY OF QAYAMAT
4.1 QAYAMAT
The Day of Judgement is the day when all souls will be returned to their dead
bodies. The bodies will come back to life and people will climb out of their graves.
This day is called the Day of Accounting because all good and bad done on earth
will be seen. This day is called the day of Qayamat because people will be afraid
to face the bad things they did on the earth. It is the day when the earth will speak
of the bad things people did and when our hands and bodies will talk against us!
4.2 THE BOOK OF LIFE
When we were born Allah sent two angels to always be with us. These two angels
write down all the things that happen to us. When we feel good or bad, when we
sleep, breath, move, talk, play or do anything the two angels write it all down. The
angels write everything down because everything that happens to us in life is
important.
THE ANGELS WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN BECAUSE
EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS IMPORTANT
The two angels write everything down in our Book of Deeds. When a person's life
is complete the Book of Deeds is closed. The book will then be given to that
person on the day of Qayamat.
4.3 WHAT THE QUR'AN SAYS
On the day of Qayamat the good and the bad will walk in different directions. They
will be separated and so the day of Qayamat is called the Day of Separation. The
good people will have a beautiful light
around them, but the bad people will be in
darkness. The good will be happy while the
bad will be gloomy. The good will greet
each other and the bad will curse each other.
The good will become beautiful while the
bad will become ugly. The good will walk
towards heaven and the bad will crawl
towards hell.

SEPERATION
Page 65
4.4 SEVEN DOORS OF HEAVEN
Islam says that there are seven doors to
heaven and there are beautiful gardens
and mansions behind each door. The
Qur'an says that heaven is called Dar
Es Sallam meaning the Home of Peace.
Those who enter heaven will become so
beautiful that even angels will marvel at
their beauty. The more good a person is
on the earth the more beautiful he or she
will be in heaven. In heaven there will
be everything a person asks for.
4.5 WHAT PEOPLE WILL DO IN HEAVEN
Heaven is a place of delight. It is a place where men and
women will enjoy their lives forever. They will love each
other with pure hearts! They will see new and beautiful
things everyday. They will meet people who lived before
them and who lived after them. Many important and famous
people will be there.
In heaven the poor and the rich will all be equal. There will
be no sickness and no sadness. Everybody will have his or
her unique beauty and important place in heaven. They will
get whatever they ask for in heaven.
When the people see so much delight in heaven they will love Allah with their
hearts. They will learn more about who Allah is and they will never die.
4.6 AMAL-E-JAREE
Amal E Jaree means doing good which stays on the earth
even after you are dead.
For example planting a tree is Amal E Jaree because many good things come from
the tree even after you have died. Giving charity, teaching good things to someone
or helping someone are also Amal E Jaree because this kind of good deeds stay on
the earth even after you have died.
Primary 5 Book 2
Page 66
So you should not miss your opportunity to do Amal E Jaree because these good
deeds are like a good investment for the hereafter.
One of the best Amal E Jaree was done by Imam Hussain who gave his life for
Islam and saved Islam forever. All Shaheeds have done the greatest Amal E Jaree
and they will keep multiplying their rewards forever.
Islam says that one of the best Amal E Jaree is to bring up children in such a
way that they become good people on the earth. This way the children will do
good on the earth and it will be because of you. So when you grow up then
try to marry and have at least one baby! Then become parents by teaching
your child to be good and spread goodness across the world.
