What is tartar?
Plaque is the sticky film of food and bacteria that forms on the
teeth and produces acids, which dissolve the tooth enamel.
Brushing with fluoride toothpaste can help to remove plaque
before it has time to harden and become tartar. Tartar build-up can
cause serious dental health problems, which may ultimately result
in tooth loss. Once tartar is formed, only a trip to the dentist can
remove it.

What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an inflammation
and infection of the gums and bone that surround and support
your teeth. It is caused by bacteria in plaque, a sticky, colourless
film that constantly forms on your teeth. Gum disease is the major
cause of tooth loss among adults.
Q&A
Stages of Periodontal Disease
What can I do to prevent cavities?
Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to help remove
food and plaque. Preventive care can help keep minor problems
from becoming major ones.
What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis, a mild inflammation of the gums, is the earliest stage of
gum disease. Plaque and tartar build up at the gum line, causing
your gums to get red and puffy. You may also notice some
bleeding during brushing and flossing.
Gingivitis
Plaque and tartar
(hardened plaque) build
up at the gum line.
Periodontitis
Plaque spreads below the
gum line and infection
occurs, damaging
supporting fibres and
bone.
Advance Periodontitis
Infections further destroy
supporting fibres and
bone.
