An Andalusian scientist opens the door to the development of more effective antibiotics LOCATION: Granada DURATION: 1’40’’ SUMMARY: Mohammed Bakkali, a researcher in genetics at the University of Granada has formulated a hypothesis that gives an answer to a question that the scientific community hasn’t been able to solve for decades: why are bacteria becoming more resistant to antibiotics? According to this scientist, the abuse of this medicine makes non resistant bacteria copy the DNA of those who are resistant. VTR: VTR They are our great ally against many diseases but always under doctor’s care, because the indiscriminate use of antibiotics may have serious consequences. JOSE MANUEL SANTAMARÍA Pharmacist “We have abused of antibiotics so much that they aren’t effective any more, or some of them.” It’s been decades since the scientific community wonders why bacteria are becoming more resistant to antibiotics. An enigma that Mohamed Bakali, researcher in genetics at the University of Granada, may have solved. MOHAMMED BAKKALI Researcher at the University of Granada “A bad use of antibiotics may promote the apparition of new resistance to antibiotics.” According to his theory, the abuse of antibiotics makes non resistant bacteria copy the DNA of those who are resistant. MOHAMMED BAKKALI Researcher at the University of Granada “For example the staphylococcus aureus. It is resistant against a wide range of antibiotics and, as it happens in operating rooms, it is a huge problem in hospitals.” That’s why it is so important not taking antibiotics when we have the flu or a cold, as they are viral infections not bacterial, so these medicines can’t treat them. PEASANT “I always visit the doctor and take what he prescribes.” Although, there are still people who take antibiotics without the supervision of a doctor. PEASANT “Sometimes, when you have a cold or the cold is starting.” MOHAMMED BAKKALI Researcher at the University of Granada “An antibiotic is like a weapon, you have to use it when it is necessary. I use the metaphor of the Cold War: the world is alive because during the Cold War the two global powers controlled themselves, they didn’t use their weapons.” A powerful weapon whose bad use can leave us helpless.
