A Winning Combination for the
Management of Infected or Colonized Wounds
The treatment of wound infection and the elimination of
odour are two major problems in wound management.
ACTISORB SILVER 220 addresses these issues with the
use of silver and charcoal.
ACTISORB SILVER 220 is the only activated charcoal cloth
treatment that contains silver and is therefore able to fight
bacteria and cleanse wounds. It is indicated for heavily
exuding, infected and malodorous wounds.
The activated charcoal cloth is impregnated with silver,
a powerful wound anti-microbial, and contained within
a nylon porous sleeve. This sleeve allows the unimpeded
passage of odour molecules and pathogens to the
charcoal cloth while preventing any tiny charcoal
filaments from entering the wound.
The potential for charcoal cloth in wound management
relates to its well-demonstrated ability to adsorb small
gas liquid molecules. The cloth has adsorbent capacities
up to 20 times that of traditional materials. Charcoal is
also a powerful deodoriser.
Silver has been used extensively for its pharmacological
and antibacterial properties and is recognised as
a safe broad-spectrum antimicrobial. Man
has been aware of the medicinal
properties of silver for 2000 years
- in recent years silver dressings
have become more popular
due to an increase in antibiotic
resistance and a better understanding of the benefits of silver.
It has been used topically for
burns, treatment of osteomyelitis
and for urinary tract infections
caused by indwelling catheters.
Silver has been found to be
effective against a wide range
of bacterial, fungal and viral
pathogens. Silver’s mode
of action also makes
it highly effective
40
against many antibiotic resistant strains including MRSA
and VRE.
ACTISORB SILVER 220 is a wound cleanser first and
foremost, with the added benefit of odour elimination. It
provides health care practitioners with a dressing that not
only removes bacteria from an infected wound but also
prevents further bacterial growth within the wound and
on the dressing itself.
For a patient with a wound, the principal problems may
not be the wound itself, but rather associated quality of
life-related issues such as pain, exudate leakage and
malodour – ACTISORB SILVER 220 effectively addresses
these issues. The dressing can be left on the wound for
up to 7 days, depending on wound exudate level and
extent of infection.
ACTISORB SILVER 220 has a unique triple action:
Step 1: The activated charcoal traps bacteria in the dressing,
removing them from the wound bed
Step 2: The metallic silver impregnated in the dressing
effectively kills the bacteria
Step 3: The activated charcoal also adsorbs, traps and
binds bacterial toxins and neutralizes odour
ACTISORB SILVER 220 is available in three sizes 6.5 x
9.5 cm, 10.5 x 10.5 cm, and 19 x 10.5 cm.
