Did you know?
There used to be 23
human milk banks in
Canada. All except
one was shut down in
the 1980s amid fears
of HIV transmission.
Saskatchewan had a
milk bank in Saskatoon
until that time.

Who are we?
The Baby Friendly Initiative Working Group is comprised of members from
different departments in the Sunrise Health Region and the Yorkton Tribal
Council. The group works on projects to promote, protect, and support
breastfeeding in following with The Baby Friendly Initiative’s 10 Steps. The
Baby Friendly Initiative is a joint project with the World Health Organization
(WHO) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund
(UNICEF) launched in 1991. For more information and where we stand as a
country in this initiative, please go to
www.breastfeedingcommitteeofcanada.ca.
To date, our group has done promotional work on skin to skin care and you
will see our posters from this project up in health care facilities within Sunrise
and YTC First Nation Communities. We have created life size cut outs of
women breastfeeding their children which have been placed in highly visible
public places to raise awareness and support for breastfeeding in public. We
attend local public events to display our projects and educate people about
The Baby Friendly Initiative. Keep your eyes open for us as we keep working
on new projects. Keep reading to learn what our latest project is.
Healthy Breastfeeding Women Helping Sick
Fragile Babies
The Baby Friendly Initiative Working Group is supporting a group of local
mom’s in the creation of a human milk bank depot in Yorkton. This depot
will collect breast milk from local moms to send on to the Calgary Mother’s
Milk Bank (CMMB). Once CMMB processes the milk donated, it is sent all
over Canada, including Saskatchewan’s own NICUs in Regina and
Saskatoon.
Who uses the Donor Milk?
-
Premature infants
Infants with problems fighting off infections or disease
Infants with allergies or who are unable to drink formula
Infants recovering from surgery
Infants who cannot digest food properly
Infants of mothers who have had an infectious disease, illness, or
take medications that may harm the baby through breastmilk

Protection against infections and diseases
Contains growth factors the protect immature tissue
Promotes growth and maturity of the digestive tract, and facilitates
healing of tissues affected by infection
Decreases the risk of infants developing NEC (necrotizing
enterocolitis), a bacterial infection of the gut
Easily digested
Provides optimal nutrition
Mothers interested in donating can contact the CMMB (1-403-475-MILK
(6455) where they will be asked about their medical history, required to
complete a written questionnaire, and need to have a blood test. Their
healthcare provider will also need to complete forms for relevant health
history and current health status.
What Happens to the Milk?
Women who are approved donors through the
CMMB can donate their frozen breast milk, and
the CMMB will then thaw and test the milk for
bacteria. Next, the milk will be pasteurized to
destroy viruses and bacteria that can be
harmful to infants while keeping most of the
milks nutritional value. After pasteurization,
the milk is tested again to be sure it’s free of
harmful bacteria. The CMMB disperses the milk
dependent on need, with premature sick
babies being first in line.
Please spread the word to any mothers who
may be interested in participating and help make this dream a reality.
Every precious drop counts!!

Baby Friendly Business
Our group is happy to announce that we are moving forward with Baby
Friendly Business in Yorkton. To celebrate our businesses joining our
initiative we are hosting an event at the Western Financial City Center
Park, June 22/15 at 10:30 am. In attendance will be all the businesses
signing on, the Mayor of Yorkton, our MLA, and representatives from both
our Sunrise Health Region and Yorkton Tribal Council.
We invite anyone to come and attend to show support for this initiative
and show appreciation to the businesses who have signed on and in doing
so are recognizing the importance breastfeeding has for the families in our
community.
