Last updated September, 2005 Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program 5-Year Summary January 1999 – December 2004 Last updated September, 2005 Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program 5-Year Summary Introduction Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program (RRRP) at Toronto-Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre (TSRCC) has been set up since 1996. Its mission is to deliver timely palliative radiotherapy to relieve symptoms in patients with advanced cancer. Since then, the program has expanded to incorporate the Bone Metastases Clinic (BMC) jointly run by orthopedic surgeons, radiation oncologists, palliative care physicians, interventional radiologists, nurses and radiation therapist. It is the first of its kind in Canada providing multidisciplinary care to cancer patients with bony metastases. RRRP and BMC continue to expand and the membership currently includes: Radiation Oncologists: Lisa Barbera Toni Barnes Edward Chow (Bone Metastases Site Chair) Cyril Danjoux (RRRP Chair) Andrew Loblaw (spinal cord compression) May Tsao Orthopedic Surgeons: Terry Axelrod Joel Finkelstein Michael Ford Hans Kreder David Stephen Albert Yee (Bone Metastases Clinic Co-Chair) Radiologists: Richard Aviv Monique Christakis Joel Rubenstein Linda Probyn Robyn Pugash Sean Symons Radiation Therapist: Emily Sinclair Clinical Trials: Mary O’Brien Robin Norton-Tkalec Medical Physicist: Parminder Basran Palliative Care Physicians: Nina Horvath Jeff Myers Debbie Selby Lesia Wynnychuk Medical Oncologists: Scott Berry Mark Clemons Yoo Ko Maureen Trudeau Pharmacists: Trudi Schueller Social Service: Margaret Fitch Magdeline Winterhoff Laboratory Medicine: David Cole Reinhold Veith Basic Science: Gurmit Singh (Director of Research, Hamilton Research Cancer Centre) Shun Wong Bioengineers: Tomas Skrinskas Cari Whyne Nurses: Grace Chan Michelle Davis Ernest Dixon Cathy Doyle Macey Farhadian Rosemary Irish Last updated September, 2005 T-SRCC Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program (RRRP) The Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program was initiated in 1996. The Program consists of the Palliative radiotherapy and bone metastases clinic. The Bone Metastases is recognized as a separate site group at TSRCC under the leadership of Drs. Edward Chow and Dr. Joel Finkelstein and will not be included in the rest of this report. Palliative Radiotherapy Clinics From the initial two clinics per week, the Palliative Radiotherapy clinics have increased to six half-day clinics per week. In January 1999, the Radiation Oncologists involved with the program decided that the RRRP should not only provide service but also be academically productive. Drs. Ewa Szumacher and Juhu Kamra are no longer involved with the RRRP clinics. Dr. Toni Barnes has joined the RRRP program. Dr. Szumacher is pursing an MSc in Education and will continue managing the monthly Palliative Care Rounds at TSRCC. This report summarizes the academic activities of the RRRP. Bone Metastases Clinic A multidisciplinary Bone Metastases Clinic was started in January 1999 and is held on alternate Fridays. It is staffed by the RRRP radiation oncologists, orthopedic surgeons, palliative care physician, nurses, and radiation therapist. This year the Bone Metastases was recognized as a separate site group at the TSRCC under the leadership of Drs. Edward Chow and Dr. Joel Finkelstein. This report summarizes the academic activities of the RRRP. Last updated September, 2005 EDUCATION Monthly Palliative Care Rounds CME Monthly Rounds: The rounds are organized by Dr. E. In November 2001, Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre became involved in PROG-O. Currently, this group meets monthly through video conference. This has improved communication between the staff involved in the palliative radiotherapy program in those centres and offered the opportunity for collaboration in research.
