The Department of Oncology within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University has a number of clinical research fellowship positions available in Medical Oncology and Malignant Hematology. The Faculty of Health Sciences is partnered with the Hamilton Academic Health Care Network, which provides care to Hamilton, Central West and North-­‐Western Ontario, serving more than 2.2 million people. The Department of Oncology is located at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Hamilton, Ontario and offers one of the largest cancer treatment services in Ontario. Over 5,000 new patients are referred to the centre each year by physicians in the region. Deadline date for this year’s Fellowship competition is July 1, 2013. Medical Oncology Clinical Research Fellowship Opportunities exist within the Division of Medical Oncology for Clinical Research Fellowships to develop subspecialty expertise. This is a large division with 30 full and part time medical oncologists all with subspecialty interests. The Juravinski Cancer Centre has one of the largest Clinical Trials departments in Canada and is a leading accruer to Cooperative Group and Industry sponsored Phase I, II and III clinical trials. Existing Fellowship opportunities include Breast and Lung cancer as well GI and GU malignancies, and clinical genetics.
Investigational New Drug (IND) Clinical Research Fellowship The Department of Oncology located at the Juravinski Cancer Centre is offering a 1-­‐2 year Investigational New Drug (IND) Fellowship. The Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada is one of the five largest cancer centres in North America, and has evolved to become one of the leading Canadian centres in the study of Investigational New Drugs (IND). In addition to being the top accruer to IND studies to the National Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group (NCIC-­‐CTG) over the past five years, the centre has also been actively involved with industry-­‐sponsored IND studies. The areas of focus for early phase drug development at the JCC include: 1. targeting cell signaling resulting in the malignant phenotype,
2. interrupting processes involved in invasion and metastasis,
3. immunomodulation and immunotherapeutic approaches.
Malignant Hematology Clinical Research Fellowship The primary objective of a 1-­‐2 year fellowship in Malignant Hematology is to provide clinical and research training opportunities across the spectrum of acute and chronic leukemia, marrow failure syndromes, lymphoproliferative disorders, plasma cell neoplasms, and stem cell transplantation. The Division of Malignant Hematology is comprised of 10 full-­‐time members with specific subspecialty and research expertise covering a broad range of hematologic malignancies including an active, FACT approved allogeneic (35/year) and autologous (70/yr) stem cell transplant program. Specific research strengths include basic laboratory/translational studies with a focus on stem cell biology and tumour immunology, active involvement in Phase I/II/III clinical trials across all disease subtypes and with national leadership roles in the fields of leukemia and stem cell transplantation, active participation and leadership in the Program for Evidence-­‐based Care (PEBC) Hematology Disease Site Group of Cancer Care Ontario (CCO), and Health Services Research. Opportunities exist for fellows to obtain formal graduate training (MSc) in Health Research Methodology through McMaster University’s renowned Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and to lead the development of a practice guideline for the CCO-­‐PEBC The one-­‐year clinical research fellowship provides fellows with a focused and high-­‐level clinical experience in one or two disease sites. Fellows are expected to enroll in the HRM 721 Fundamentals of Health Research & Evaluation Methods course in the Health Research Methodology Program at McMaster University.
The two-­‐year clinical research fellowship provides fellows who have been accepted into the program with an opportunity to obtain a Master’s of Science degree in Health Research Methodology. Salary will be at the PGY6 level.
