Web Design Chapter 2:
Web Publishing Fundamentals
DIRECTIONS:
1. Read and answer questions: Read the chapter in the WEB DESIGN textbook, and then fill in the answers
to the questions below. Change the font color of your answers to RED (or another color of your
choice) so the answers are easily distinguished from the questions for grading.
2. Save as PDF: When you have completed this assignment, save this file as a WORD file, and then
save as a PDF file in your WD folder (press F12 for SAVE AS, then choose PDF from the SAVE AS
TYPE dropdown list).
NOTE: You will upload your PDF file, share with your instructor, and link to your index page when you
have learned to do this.
PART 1: Chapter 2: Read the chapter from the WEB DESIGN textbook, and then fill in the answers to these
questions in the row after the question.
Definitions: Briefly define the following terms:
1. White space – The empty space that surrounds webpage elements
2. Brand – The assurance or organization offers to his customers
3. Chunked text – Easy to scan webpage text in small text sections containing headings, subheadings and
bulleted lists.
4. Band width – Quantity of data that can be transmitted in a specific time frame, measured in bits per second (bps)
5. Alt text (alternative text) –A text description provided for a webpage image that appears if images are
unavailable or turned off in the browser.
6. Pixel – Short for picture element, a single point in an electronic image.
Questions: Answer each of the following briefly, but completely.

2. Cost Advantage – It is less to publish a website that to print printed material
3. Inexpensive distribution – you can use your website and social media in order to advertise an event free
of charge.
4. Complexity of color – The more complexity there is in a colored brochure vs. a website the more money
it cost to produce it.
5. You can’t put multi-media in a printed brochure or flyer. You could put the link, but with a website you
have immediate access to multimedia materials such as videos, images and animation.
6. Briefly describe these basic design principles with regard to effective web page design:
a. Balance – The harmonious arrangement of webpage elements
b. Proximity – A design element in which related webpage elements are arranged together.
c. Contrast – A mix of webpage elements used to stimulate attention.
d. Unity – A sense of oneness or belonging.
e. Visual identity – The combination of design elements identified with a website and its publisher.

Pet Rescue RX because they put pets before profit. They do two things supply you with a product and
contribute towards pet shelters.

 Accuracy - Errors and unreliable information can diminish your websites credibility
 Currency – Need to delete old content and keep website fresh with updated information.
 Scannability – Chunked text is much easier to scan – (small paragraphs with pertinent information)
 Organization – Inverted pyramid – (summary, details, then background information.)

 Primary colors – Red, Yellow and Blue
 Secondary colors – Orange, Green and purple
 Cool colors – Green, blue and purple
 Warm colors – Yellow, Orange and Red
 Complementary colors – Opposite on the color wheel

The Google Doodle is an artistic version of the Google logo. Google Doodles represent events like holidays,
anniversaries, or current events. Some of the doodles were limited to Google's country specific home pages while others
appeared globally.

Simplify the navigation and content to accommodate a smaller screen
9. What are some legal issues involved in web publishing? You are responsible for obtaining all
permissions for content on your website, and can be subject to fines or prosecution for any violations.
10. What are some privacy issues involved in web publishing?
11. If you gather information from your customers, you need to take steps in order to protect this
information from unauthorized access for theft. In order to take confidential information you can use
Encryption a process that encodes data into illegible content.
12. What are some accessibility and usability issues involved in web publishing? Web designers need to
make sure they have created a website that is usable by people with various types of special needs, such
as lost or impaired vision or color blindness. The World Wide Web sets standards for accessibility and
usability of websites. Usability involves designing a website and its pages so that all visitors to the
website can easily and quickly satisfy their goals.
