KERN’S DROP BOX WITH YOUR NAME IN THE FILENAME!! ** Web Design Photoshop Project Page 1 of 2 USING THE WALLPAPER TEMPLATE 1. After downloading the Wallpaper template from Mr. Kern’s Web Design page, open the PSD file in Adobe Photoshop. a. Once the Wallpaper Template PSD file opens, show the Guides by selecting View > Show > Guides b. You should see Guidelines in your file that resemble the figure to the right. c. These Guidelines represent the edges of a variety of wallpaper sizes, which correspond to the most commonly used monitor screen resolutions. Using this template allows you to create a design that can be easily cropped to fit these various resolutions. 2. Design your wallpaper with the Guidelines visible, keeping the important elements of your design (i.e. text, images, etc.) within the inner most guides, as illustrated in the figure below. a. Keeping these elements within these “safe area” boundaries ensures that they will not be cropped when resizing your wallpaper to other screen resolutions. b. Continue your design beyond the “safe area” boundaries, but realize that these areas are subject to cropping. Avoid putting important details in the areas outside the safe zone. 3. After you have designed your wallpaper, save your PSD and proceed to cropping/resizing the artwork for use with various screen resolutions. 4. RESIZING YOUR ARTWORK: a. For 1920 x 1200 screen resolutions: No image size adjustment or cropping required. i. Simply save your design using Photoshop’s Save for Web and Devices option. ii. Add “_1920” to the end of your filename to easily indicate the intended resolution size. b. For 1440 x 900 screen resolutions: Open the 1920 x 1200 wallpaper exported in the previous step. i. Go to Image > Image Size to resize your wallpaper to 1440 pixels wide and 900 pixels high. ii. Use Save for Web and Devices to export the resized image. iii. Add “_1440” to the end of your filename to indicate the intended resolution. c. For 1280 x 1024 screen resolutions: Open the 1920 x 1200 wallpaper again. i. Go to Image > Image Size and resize wallpaper to 1638 pixels wide and 1024 pixels high. ii. Use Image > Canvas Size… to crop the width of the design to 1280 pixels. iii. Use Save for Web and Devices to export the resized and cropped image. iv. Add “_1280” to the end of your filename. d. For 1024 x 768 screen resolutions: Open the 1920 x 1200 wallpaper again. i. Go to Image > Image Size and resize wallpaper to 1229 pixels wide and 768 pixels high. ii. Use Image > Canvas Size… to crop the width of the design to 1024 pixels. iii. Use Save for Web and Devices to export the resized and cropped image. iv. Add “_1024” to the end of your filename. 5. Place all four versions of your wallpaper into a folder named “YourName_Wallpapers.” Copy this folder into the Drop Box folder labeled “Wallpapers.” Web Design Photoshop Project Page 2 of 2
