Georgia Community Offers Cycling Lessons from the Pros
DAHLONEGA, GEORGIA (September 23, 2013) – Have you ever wondered
if you have what it takes to race a bicycle? Do you wonder what it takes
to pedal up Mt. Diablo in California or Brasstown Bald in Georgia? Or do
you simply want to learn how to better enjoy a leisurely peddle along the
Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta, Georgia? All levels of riders enjoyed
Alpharetta’s Cycling Celebration on Saturday, September 21, from 10am1pm, with members of the 5-hour ENERGY® presented by Kenda Racing
Team on hand for the event at Alpharetta High School.
Alpharetta’s Cycling Celebration included a meet and greet with the
professional cyclists, a safe cycling presentation, and bike rodeo for
children of all ages. Free bicycle helmets were provided for children,
toddlers to age 12. Other prizes included bike bells, coloring books, as well
as food and beverages for all families in attendance.
This event was an element of the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety’s Bicycle Safety Campaign, made
possible by grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The Department of Public Safety
recognized the increasing participation in cycling throughout the city, and used this grant program as an
opportunity to educate cyclists, drivers, and law enforcement officers alike to ensure that safety is the main focus
of all users of the roadway. Members of Bike Alpharetta, a local bicycle advocacy organization, provided
volunteers to conduct helmet fittings and hand out bicycle safety information.
The 5-hour ENERGY® presented by Kenda Racing Team is the only professional, Continental men’s cycling team
based in Georgia. The Team competed in six Union Cycliste International (UCI)-sanctioned stage races in three
countries this season and was the top U.S. domestic racing team at both the Amgen Tour of California (May) and
Tour of Alberta (September). Two team members who participated at Alpharetta’s Cycling Celebration were
Bobby Sweeting of Asheville, N.C., who finished 6th overall the Tour of Alberta, and Christian Parrett of Macon,
Ga., who was part of the team’s third place finish at Tour of the Gila in New Mexico in May.
