Origin/Discovery
Sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in all SPLENDA® Sweetener Products, was discovered in
1976.
Sucralose is made from a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and selectively
replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms.
Although sucralose is made from a process that starts with sugar, it is not sugar and the body
does not recognize it as a carbohydrate. It is not metabolized by the body for energy, so it is
calorie-free.
Sucralose received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in April 1998 for use in 15
food and beverage categories, the broadest initial approval ever given to a no calorie sweetener.
In 1999, it was permitted for use as a general purpose sweetener.
Sucralose has been subjected to one of the most extensive and thorough safety testing
programs ever conducted on a new food additive.
More than 100 scientific studies, representing over 20-years of research, have been conducted
to support the safety of sucralose.
Regulatory agencies worldwide have reviewed these studies and found sucralose to be safe
including the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Joint Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO)/ World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee on Food Additives
(JECFA), the Health Protection Branch of Health and Welfare Canada and Food Standards
Australia/New Zealand.
Sucralose is permitted for use in more than 80 countries, and more than 4,000 food and
beverage products around the world are sweetened with SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener.
