Make sure you have a valid passport, a vaccination booklet that is up to date, your medical insurance card and travel insurance. Make photocopies to be left at home and in your luggage. Remember to email yourself a copy as well. How to minimize jet lag 1. Try staying awake and active during sunlight hours at your travel destination. 7. Avoid eating coral fish which may contain a toxin which provokes ciguatera (potential gastrointestinal and neurological effects), including: barracuda, grouper, snapper, and sea bass. It is preferable to eat fish whose diameter is inferior to the width of your plate. You should also avoid shellfish: oysters, mussels and scallops. 2. Visit www.travel.gc.ca to find out how to register as a Canadian abroad. Visit also the website of the embassy of the country visited. 2. Eat at the hours appropriate for your travel destination's time zone. 8. Avoid purchasing food from street vendors or from small markets. On the plane 1. Remember to carry the following during your flight: Bubble gum (alleviates earache) Decongestants or “ear plane” ear plugs (if you normally suffer from earache) A bottle of water (purchase only once you have passed the security checkpoint). 2. Drink plenty of water during your flight and avoid alcohol, tea, and coffee. Walk in the aisle occasionally. Purchase support hose if necessary. Motion sickness Preventive measures 1. Sit in the centre of the boat or plane in a semi-reclined position, if possible. 2. Avoid reading or focusing on a moving object. 3. Eat small servings of food frequently and avoid alcohol. 4. Some medications can reduce nausea (e.g., Gravol). Confirm with your pharmacist that your anti-nausea drugs are not contraindicated for you. 3. Exercise. If you have diarrhea 4. Melatonin may help you. Good-quality melatonin can provide positive benefits, especially if you are travelling east. Confirm with your pharmacist whether there are any drug interactions. Initiate a liquid diet (e.g.: Gastrolyte) for 4 to 6 hours. If you have persistent diarrhea, take your antibiotic according to the prescribed dose and Imodium, if necessary. If you have a fever above 38o C or blood in your stools, consult a physician. Beware of mosquitoes During your trip To prevent health problems, including diarrhea and infections 1. Wash your hands regularly: hand sanitizers may come in handy. (e.g.: Purell). 2. Always drink or use sealed, bottled water, even when brushing your teeth. 3. Avoid beverages which contain ice cubes, even if they have holes. 4. Go to the buffet early, as soon as it opens. 5. Eat foods which have been cooked, boiled or peeled only. Eat your meat and sea food well done. 6. Consume only dairy products that have been pasteurized. 1. Purchase insect repellent (20 to 30% DEET, such as Watkins) and take long, pale-coloured clothing to avoid insect bites. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and avoid the noon sun. 2. Purchase unscented body care products (e.g.: soap, deodorant) and sunscreen lotion (minimum SPF 30). Perfumes attract insects. 3. Some mosquitoes can transmit dengue fever (fever, muscular pain). There is no specific treatment. Prevention is the only option available. 4. Take your preventive medication when travelling in an area where there is malaria. Leave the screens on the windows. Turn on the air conditioning: it reduces the presence of insects. 5. Do not squash scorpions and spiders. Cover them with a glass tumbler and notify hotel staff.
