Power supply and estimated operating time
1. Permanent 230 VAC
Warning!
To connect Infospeed to the public power supply outdoors, a connection must be available
that satisfies the local electrical guidelines and safety requirements.
The power supply line phase [brown/black wire] must be secured with a suitable fuse,
typically 4 to 6 A. Otherwise the electronics in Infosped may be damaged or destroyed in
case of over-current.
When Infospeed is in a fixed installation, e.g. to street lights, a disconnectable overcurrent
protective device (max. 6A) according to EN60950 must be installed between the power
supply line and Infospeed. For service work on Infospeed the power supply must be
disconnected via the over-current protective device.
The over-current protective device is to be installed in accordance with the local electrical
guidelines and safety requirements.
The electrical connections must always be produced in accordance with the requirements
for the intended location.
In all case the GROUND has to be connected.
1. Open the case with the provided special key.
2. Use min. 3x1,5 mm2 wire to connect the power supply via the rubber grommet. Cut
out a hole on the grommet and push your cable across the hole.
3. Make the connections as picture show.
4. After you prepared the connection, put the fuses to the fuse boxes. All fuses are 4 A. (size:
5x20 mm)
Operating time: 24/7
2. 230 VAC + battery version (”public lighting” version)
This solution is very popular, because the cost of the power line installation can be
eliminated, while the public ligthing is always working in the nigth-time.
In this case a battery is installed in Infospeed and it can be charged up during the night-time
getting enough power to work for all day-time without any external power source.
For the power supply a 12 Volt lead-acid sealed battery pack with a capacity of 20 Ah is
installed in housing of speed sign.
It has a discharge protection for the battery to prevent irreversible chemical decomposition of
the battery electrolyte due to long time discharges below 10,7 Volt. The protection circuit
disconnects the battery when the voltage drops below 10,8 Volt and (re-) connects it when
the battery voltage is 11,7 Volt minimum.
The operating time depends on the number of displayed speed values, the environment
brightness and self evidently on the battery capacity. In bright sunlight the power
consumption due to maximum LED brightness is about 10 Watt maximum when displaying
„188“, by night on minimum LED brightness level less than 2 Watt.
So the operating time of Infospeed at a display rate (relation between display on and off
time) of 25%, with calculated 16 day and 8 night hours for the 20 Ah battery approx. one
week.
The charger system has overcharge protection as well to protect the battery from too high
voltage.
Battery:
Type: DIAMEC
Voltage: 12 VDC
Power: 20 Ah
Stand-by charging: 13,5 – 13,8 VDC
Cycle (impulse) charging: 14,8 - 15,0 VDC
Advantages:
-
Sealed construction
Electrolyte suspension system
Low maintenance operation
Operation in any position
Low pressure venting
Cyclic service life (1000 charging cycle)
Long shelf life
Wide operating temperarture range.
3. Solar panel version
Supplier provides 80 W solar panel (there is some special case when we provide 160W
solar panel e.g. 3G data logger is used by solar power).
80 W solar panel can make enough power to work Infospeed in 24/7. Sure we can not say
this, because there is some added conditions, such as traffic volume, season, weather e.t.c
that can be determined the working hours.
Please find an evaluation in Europe (Paris) if 80 W solar panel is used.

Mounting of solar panel:
If you use solar panel you have to use 350 cm (+ 50 cm in the ground) pole. The pole is 2.5”.
The solar can be mounted by aluminium brackets. The panel is fixed in 35o degrees
optimized slope (this degree is the best solution for high voltage in Europe).
The same brackets are used as before at mounting the speed sign.
Note: The solar panel should be directed to South. If there is no possibility to do this
and the solar panel is directed to North, you will loose at least 60-70 % power of solar
panel.
Solar panel connections:
2 x 4 mm2 cable is used for the solar system to eliminate the losting of voltage and try to use
short cable as we can. The cable is installed in the speed sign, so the cable has to be
connected in the connection box.
The red cable has to be connected to the positive polarity and the black cable has to be
connected to the negative polarity int he connection box.
After the connection please put the fuses into the fuse-box and the speed sign starts to work
immediatelly.
Lightning protection:
Normally the producer does not use any added protection system on Infospeed. Sure the
GROUND has to be connected to Infospeed case, and this is a very good first protection
level. Otherwise we had never any problem before regarding the lightning.
On the other hand the most dangeouros installation is the stand-alone siutation with a
permanent or public lighting power source without any higher object around the pole.
In this case a special internal ligthning protection can be installed, which is shutt-off when
the lightning causes any high voltage.
