The completion of the series of electrical and mechanical classes will help prepare a person
to take the exams for the Texas State Air Conditioning and Refrigeration licenses. These
classes will also prepare the person to work as a technician in the HVAC/R trade including
domestic and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration.
Refrigeration Principles includes an introduction to the refrigeration cycle along with the
heat transfer theory and temperature/pressure relationships. Identifying refrigeration
componets, refrigerant handling, use of the common tools and test equipment and safety
procedures will be studied.
Basic Electricity for HVAC includes electrical safety, what an electrical circuit is, how to
use meters to trouble shoot circuits, identifying electrical components and symbols in
air conditioning systems, and reading schematic diagrams. It also includes knowledge of
alternating current, power distribution and voltage systems. Basic electric motors and the
installation of heating, cooling, and refrigeration systmes will be studied.
Air Conditioning Control Priniciples includes the study of installation, maintenance,
troubleshooting, sales, engineering, load sizing, air quality management, identifying
control devices, and controly systems, as well as professionalism in the HVAC work
environment. Outcomes include communication, skills competencies, critical thinking,
and professional growth.
*Pre-requisites: Refrigeration Principles & Basic Electricity/HVAC
Gas & Electric Heating includes the study of the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting,
sales, engineering, load sizing, air quality management for gas furnaces and electric
heating systems, including component operations, servicing gas furnaces and electric
heating systems, and performing safety inspections of gas & electric heating systems. *Pre-requisites: Refrigeration Principles & Basic Electricity/HVAC
