Department of Electronic Engineering IEEE AP/MTT HK Joint Chapter Seminar Phase Noise Reduction Techniques for RF CMOS Voltage Controlled Oscillator Design by Dr K K Michael Cheng Department of Electronic Engineering Chinese University of Hong Kong Abstract In wireless communication systems, the phase noise of VCO is a prime concern to ensure little interference with nearby channels. Low phase noise also implies the use of high Q resonators such as off-chip inductors or bond-wires, which is impractical for low-cost highly integrated RF transceiver design. An effective way to reduce phase noise is enlarging the oscillation amplitude, thus making the signal much larger than the noise. However, for some applications, the maximum voltage swing is limited by the low supply voltage and power consumption requirement. Recently, much research effort has been devoted to the reduction of phase noise in CMOS oscillator design. In this presentation, the design and implementation of fully integrated 1.5 GHz VCO circuits using 0.6μm digital CMOS technology will be described. Various new circuit techniques for phase-noise reduction will also be addressed. Biography Michael obtained both his B.Sc. degree (1987) and Ph.D. degree (1993) in electronic engineering from King’s College, University of London, UK. From 1990 to 1992, he was Research Assistant at King’s, researching in the area of hybrid circuit and MMIC design. From 1993 to 1995, he worked as Post-Doctoral Research Associate on the design and analysis of coplanar structures for microwave/millimeter-wave applications. In 1996, he joined the department of electronic engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as Assistant Professor. Michael is the author/co-author of over 30 journal papers and more than 20 international conference papers. He is also a contributing author of two books: “MMIC Design” and “RFIC & MMIC design and technology”, published by the IEE in 1995 and 2001, respectively. His current research interests include MMIC/RFIC design, linearization techniques for microwave circuits, and application of LTCC technology.
