Plant Names for the Exam
Alpine or Rock Garden Plants
Armeria maritima - is a mat-forming evergreen perennial with dense, needle-like
leaves and erect scapes to 15cm, bearing compact clusters of cup-shaped pink flowers in
late spring and summer.
Sedum acre - tufted perennial that forms mat-like stands some 5 to 12 cm tall. Yellow
flowers.
Saxifraga x apiculata - mostly mat-forming in habit, with simple or palmately lobed
leaves and starry or rounded flowers in white, yellow or pink.
Sempervivum arachnoideum - an evergreen perennial forming a mat of fleshy
rosettes 1-3cm across, leaves green or reddish, with cobwebby white hairs at the tips. Pink
flowers.
Aquilegia jonesii – compact perennial, violet-blue flowers, small rosetts of blue-grey or
grey-green leaves, suitable for an alpine house only. Up to 5 cm across.
Pusatilla vulgaris - a perennial to 20cm, forming a clump of finely dissected basal
leaves. Violet flowers.
Hedyotis michauxil – vigorous perennial, produces mats of mid-green foliage, violetblue flowers.
Gentiana verna – small evergreen perennial forming a mat of ovate leaves, with solitary
sky-blue flowers with white throats.
Dianthus alpinus - is a mat-forming hardy perennial with dark green foliage and
solitary, pale-spotted, deep pink to cerise flowers 4cm wide.
Iberis sempervirens - a spreading evergreen sub-shrub to 30cm in height, with narrow,
dark green leaves. Pure white flowers in dense heads.

Geranium macrorrhizum 'Mytikas' – a carpet-forming perennial to 30cm, spreading to
160cm. Flowers are profuse, borne in dense umbels, purplish-pink with rose-red anthers
and calyces.
Bergenia cordifolia - a vigorous perennial forming a spreading clump of rounded, wavy
leaves to 30cm long, often tinged purple in winter; tall erect red stems carry sprays of deep
pink flowers in early spring.
Persicaria affinis – evergreen perennial with glossy, lance-shaped leaves which turn
reddish in dry conditions, and take on brown tints in autumn. Upright spikes of rose red
flowers early summer to autumn.
Ajuga reptans - a spreading stoloniferous perennial to 15cm in height, forming a wide
mat of dark green obovate leaves, with erect spikes of dark blue flowers in late spring and
early summer.
Astrania maxima - an herbaceous perennial to 60cm, forming a clump of three-lobed
leaves with branching stems bearing flower-heads with broad, pinkish bracts surrounding
tiny pink flowers.
Brunnera macrophylla - a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with large, ovate or
heart-shaped basal leaves and sprays of small bright blue flowers in spring.

Acanthus spinosus – the plants make large, mound-shaped rosettes of glossy leathery
leaves, finely cut and each tipped with a spine. Tall two-tone flower spikes.
Verbena bonariensis - a tall perennial with erect, branching stems to 2m in height,
bearing sparse, oblong leaves and large branched clusters of small, purple flowers from
summer to autumn.
Ranunculus acris is an upright perennial with long-stalked, palmately divided leaves
and open panicles of bright glossy yellow, bowl-shaped flowers 2.5cm

Geranium macrorrhizum 'Mytikas' – a carpet-forming perennial to 30cm, spreading

ovate leaves becoming bronze-tinged in autumn, and erect racemes of small, creamy-white
flowers.
Pulmonaria angustifolia - clump-forming herbaceous perennial to 30cm, with hairy,
ovate dark green leaves and leafy stems bearing bright deep blue, funnel-shaped flowers.
Winter and Early Spring Interest
Bergenia cordifolia - a vigorous perennial forming a spreading clump of rounded, wavy
leaves to 30cm long, often tinged purple in winter; tall erect red stems carry sprays of deep
pink flowers in early spring.
Festuca glauca – a blue dwarf grass with blue foliage and steel blue flower-heads, forms
a dense upright tussock.
Heuchera 'Chocolate Ruffles' - evergreen, clump-forming perennial, forms a compact
clump of ruffled, brownish-red leaves 10cm long, with purple undersides and tall sprays of
small white flowers in early summer.
Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet' – a vigorous evergreen carpeting perennial to 20cm
tall, forms a dense mat of grey-white elliptic leaves to 10cm long.

Myosotis sylvatica ‘Victoria Blue’ - biennial forming a low mound of grey-green
leaves, smothered with clusters of bright sky-blue flowers, each with a tiny yellow eye.
Campanula medium – a biennial of upright growth, with a basal rosette of lanceshaped leaves and a leafy stem carrying blue, pink or white, single or double flowers in
summer.
Erysimum cheiri – a biennial with one or more highly branching stems reaching heights
of 15–80 cm. The leaves are narrow and pointed. At the the top of the stem is a clubshaped inflorescence of strongly scented flowers.

Digitalis purpurea - a biennial or short-lived perennial, with a rosette of hairy, oval
leaves and tall, one-sided spires of tubular, bright rosy-purple flowers in summer.
Matthiola longipetala subsp. Bicornis – hardy annual - low-growing and highly
branched in form, spread about 45 cm in length, four-petaled purple to white flowers.
