EDENDALE NURSERY 2015 PRODUCT CATALOGUE Dear Customer, This year we have introduced some new products to the Edendale range and have increased the number of payment options to improve ease of ordering from the nursery. From 2015, along with our traditional pine species (P. radiata, P.ponderosa, P.nigra) we can offer a range of pine hybrids (Pinus attenuata crossed with Pinus radiata) selected from trials in the Southland/Otago region, grown primarily as bare root product but also available as container (potted) stock. These hybrids represent an alternative option to Douglas-fir on elevated or harsh sites and can also be planted as a border species around Douglas-fir stands. We are also growing a select range of ArborGen SuperTree radiata pine varietals at Edendale and can offer these for sale from 2016 onwards. Varietals are the best individual radiata pine trees selected from our tree breeding programme for the best combination of traits such as growth and form, produced using our proprietary production technology. Please contact Edendale Nursery with any enquiries on these new products. If you are planning a substantial future or multi-year planting programme, we are happy to grow trees for you on a contract basis - please contact us to discuss your requirements. We can also assist you with obtaining specialist planning advice (please note that we do not offer this service ourselves). This season, we will offer you the ability to pay by EFTPOS at the nursery. You can also order trees from Edendale using your Farmlands card (thus increasing any discounts you get based on the value of all your card transactions). Along with this improved flexibility comes one small change: all orders of $200 or less in value (GST exclusive) must be paid for (cash, EFTPOS or by valid Farmlands card) at time of order, prior to pick up or dispatch of trees. Finally, I hope you like the new design elements of our brochure. We have also refreshed our website (www.arborgen.co.nz) – there is a lot of information about our products and other nursery locations in New Zealand on the updated site. Thank you for your support in 2014. We look forward to assisting you in 2015. CARE OF TREE STOCKS PLANTING CONTAINER GROWN STOCK Roots must be kept moist at all times 1. Bare-rooted trees in cartons: Trees as packed when they leave the nursery, should be quite safe for 3 days, provided they are kept cool and moist. Never stand in direct sunlight. Root-trainers Open root-trainer, taking care not to disturb the soil block. Remove 2-4 cm at base of soil block with a sharp knife or shears. Plant in well-cultivated ground, covering soil block. • Open top flaps of the carton and fold back plastic liner. • Ensure roots are moist – add extra water if necessary • Do not wet the foliage If you delay planting longer than 5 days, remove trees from the carton and heel into soil, sawdust or sand and moisten. Space trees to avoid rotting of foliage. 2 Trees in Bundles: May be held for 4-6 days, provided roots are kept moist, any longer and trees should be heeled in, as above. 3 Trees in containers: eg. root-trainers or planter bags may be kept for long periods provided potting mix is kept watered. 4 Cool storage: May be bagged and kept for several weeks in cool storage Planter Bags Remove from plastic bag. Ensure any circulating roots, are teased out straight (or removed). Do not plant with circulating roots as this will cause toppling at a later stage. WEED CONTROL PLANTING Open Ground Stock Plant them, do not stuff them Grass and vegetation competes with new trees for light and soil moisture. • Selective herbicides applied before or after planting will give up to 12 months total weed control. Talk to nursery personnel for recommendations. • Removing competition will increase tree survival and growth.
