Data Replication and Disaster
Recovery for Enterprise Content
Features and Benefits
An increasing challenge facing
businesses today is effectively
managing their critical content,
ensuring its availability and recoverability, while optimizing limited
storage resources. LEGATO is there
to help meet this challenge with a
combination of technologies
designed for the enterprise content
management environment. LEGATO
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions®
offers a powerful data protection
and rapid recovery solution for
Windows, by enabling you to
combine LEGATO RepliStor®,
LEGATO ApplicationXtender® and
LEGATO DiskXtender® in the same
configuration. ApplicationXtender
allows a business to capture,
organize and intelligently access
content, RepliStor creates a
replicated copy of that same data to
a local or remote location, and then
DiskXtender is applied to the
replicated data to optimize disk
utilization. The resulting environment delivers cost effective content
management, data protection and
recovery against failure and disk
optimization that is easy to
implement, configure and support.
At the heart of any enterprise content management environment is a critical component that
ensures data protection and availability.
LEGATO RepliStor for XtenderSolutions offers
a simple and reliable asynchronous replication
solution that geographically distributes
identical sets of data to one or many
computers in local or remote environments.
This solution increases the availability of
critical images or database data by delivering
real-time copies as needed in virtually any
location. RepliStor for XtenderSolutions
ensures that if a disk fails before a new image
is archived, that the image can be recovered.
And if a disk fails, recovery is much more rapid
than by restoring from tape or from an archive.
Remote replication also enables rapid recovery
of documents and the ApplicationXtender (AX)
database in the event of a site outage or local
disaster. DiskXtender(DX) when added to this
environment delivers automated, policy-based
management at the replicated site –
automatically and intelligently moving inactive
data to the most cost-effective media and
devices while minimizing the time and cost
required to manage that storage infrastructure.
These technologies guarantee reliable
low-cost content management and ensure
business continuance by offering disaster
recovery of content images and database
information. An exact copy of each replicated
file is instantly available on the targeted
systems, either locally or remotely. RepliStor
for XtenderSolutions can be configured to
failover the source system and move network
information to the target system if the source
system fails. This preserves the network
connections from the client to the server as
well as the data in the event of server failures.
The software works over a LAN or a WAN and
never affects application performance. And
with RepliStor for Xtender Solution’s Alias
support, recovering from a failover can take
seconds, without user downtime – maintaining
data and application availability for your
global customers.
System Efficiency
LEGATO RepliStor for XtenderSolutions uses
minimal server and network resources because
after the initial replication of files, the
software only updates the changes of data.
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions also allows
companies to dedicate a NIC to replication
traffic, making it easy to isolate from the
rest of the network and manage its impact
on bandwidth.
In the figure on the next page, as new data
is written to the “source” AX servers (left),
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions operates
normally to capture it, forward it, and update
it on the “target” server systems (right). Those
servers can be located either locally or
remotely from the “source” AX servers. The
“target” systems can also run DX to extend the
target system’s disk. With DX on a second
system, RepliStor for XtenderSolutions
replicates data onto the “target” disk, DX sees
it and adds it to the DX move list and then
migrates it onto secondary storage media and
updates the extended file properties. DX then
replaces the file with stub data in a process
known as “purging” the server disk.
In the event that the AX data is somehow
destroyed or lost, then RepliStor for Xtender
Solution’s synchronization function can be used
to replicate the entire protected AX set of data
from the “target” system back to the “source”
AX system. When DX is present in the
deployment, DX will automatically “fetch”
all of the files from secondary storage
without manual intervention as part of the
resynchronization process. If the “target”
system disk is smaller than the size of the AX
data archive, then DX’s normal capabilities to
begin and continue purging while completing
the fetch will ensure that the disk is appropriately managed.
RepliStor for Xtender Solutions can be configured to replicate data in any Windows environment as shown in the illustration
above. The solution prevents content images and database files from being a single-point-of-failure and offers disaster
recovery by replicating to a remote location.
PRODUCT FEATURES
ADMINISTRATION CHALLENGES
Disk failure causes loss of data image
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions can be configured to
replicate AX document images and objects, so that
there is always at least two online copies of those
documents
Ensures that if a disk fails before you have archived a
new image, that you can always recover that image
Must deliver on service level requirements for
data/services availability
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions can also be configured to replicate the AX SQL or Oracle database, so
that there are always at least two online copies of
that database
Ensures that if a disk fails, that you can more rapidly
recover document images and the AX database than
by restoring from tape or an archive
Must deliver availability solution to protect critical
applications within a limited budget
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions can be configured to
replicate AX documents and data over local or widearea distances, or both
Replication to remote distance enables rapid
recovery of your documents and AX database in the
event of a site outage or disaster
Require replicated copy of critical AX data but can’t
afford the storage subsystem needed for the volume
of data
RepliStor for XtenderSolutions can replicate AX
documents and DISKXTENDER 2000 can be used for
efficient and cost effective storage
Increase protection while saving money
