SPSS Data Access Pack 2.0 Installation Instructions Before You Install The SPSS Data Access Pack allows you to install any or all of the following components: ! Connect ODBC drivers ! Connect JDBC ! SequeLink ODBC and JDBC clients ! Online documentation for Connect ODBC and SequeLink These components allow you to retrieve data from databases in a network environment. How you proceed depends on whether or not you have an SPSS system administrator. If you have an SPSS system administrator. Contact your SPSS system administrator for information about how to configure your desktop computer with the SPSS Data Access Pack. In some cases you will not need to install anything. If your administrator tells you to run this setup procedure, follow his or her instructions. If you currently have SPSS Data Access Pack drivers installed, do not reinstall them unless directed to do so by your administrator. If you do not have an SPSS system administrator. If there is no system administrator at your site, or if you are not using this SPSS product in a network environment, you can install ODBC drivers by running this setup. If you are an SPSS system administrator. Decide which database access technology you want to use at your site. Then decide which client software to install and where to install it. For more information about available database access technologies, refer to Getting Started with SPSS Data Access Technology (in the \Installation Documents directory on your product CD). If you have installed an earlier version of the SPSS Data Access Pack. See the What's New section for information about what is new in this version and why you might want to upgrade. If you are a Java Developer. If you are a Java developer and want to access data from Java applets or applications, consider using Connect JDBC or the SequeLink JDBC Client, which are included in the SPSS Data Access Pack. For more information, see the SPSS Data Access Pack JDBC Installation Instructions (in the \Installation Documents directory on your product CD). What You Need to Run Connect ODBC on Windows The minimum hardware and software requirements for Connect ODBC are: ! Eight megabytes of random-access memory (RAM) on Windows 95 or Windows 98, and 16MB on Windows NT and 2000. Relational database drivers may require additional memory. ! A hard disk with at least 15 MB of available hard disk space. Note that these requirements are for Connect ODBC only; your SPSS product may have additional requirements. SPSS Data Access Pack Installation Instructions What You Need to Run the SequeLink ODBC Client on Windows The minimum hardware and software requirements for the SequeLink ODBC client are: • Eight megabytes of random-access memory (RAM) on Windows 95 or Windows 98, and 16MB on Windows NT and 2000. • A Winsock 1.1-compliant (or above) TCP/IP stack. • A server on the network running SequeLink Server 5.1. Note that these requirements are for the SequeLink ODBC client only; your SPSS product may have additional requirements. What's New? If you have an SPSS administrator at your site, do not upgrade unless you are directed to do so. Installing a driver or client from this SPSS Data Access Pack does not uninstall earlier drivers. Instead it makes the newly-installed software available to you. The newly-installed software must be manually configured; the configuration of your earlier driver is not transferred. If your earlier driver is working properly and meets your needs, it is best not to upgrade to a new version. Only upgrade when you require support for a database that was previously unsupported or when you require an enhancement. Connect ODBC News All Connect ODBC drivers are now version 3.7, service pack 1. The earlier SPSS Data Access Pack had version 3.6 drivers. The new version contains bug fixes and support for additional database versions. You do not need to install it unless you are experiencing a bug or need a driver that supports a recent database release. Connect JDBC is now included with the SPSS Data Access Pack, in addition to the SequeLink JDBC client. If you are a developer and you want more information, see SPSS Data Access Pack JDBC Installation Instructions (in the \Installation Documents directory on your product CD). SequeLink News Clients for SequeLink Server 5.1 are now included. The previous version had 5.0 and 4.5 clients. You only need to install a SequeLink 5.1 client if you are using SequeLink Server 5.1 at your site. Installing Acrobat Reader To install Acrobat Reader, insert your SPSS product CD into the CD-ROM drive. The AutoPlay feature presents a menu. To run the Setup program, choose Install Acrobat Reader and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Microsoft Data Access Pack A Microsoft Access driver is not included with Connect ODBC. If you need a Microsoft Access driver, you can either install it from your Microsoft software, or you can install it you can install it from your SPSS product CD-ROM by following the steps below. To install the Microsoft Data Access Pack, which includes a Microsoft Access driver: # Insert the SPSS product CD into your CD-ROM drive. # Choose Browse the CD-ROM from the AutoPlay menu. # Navigate to the Microsoft Data Access Pack folder and open it. # Double-click Microsoft Data Access Pack.exe. # Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. After You Install After you install Connect ODBC drivers or the SequeLink client, additional steps are required before you can use them to connect to your database. How you proceed depends on whether or not you have an SPSS system administrator. If you have an SPSS system administrator. Get connection instructions from your SPSS system administrator. If you do not have an SPSS system administrator. Create and configure ODBC data sources for the Connect ODBC driver(s) or SequeLink client that you installed. If you are an SPSS system administrator. Create and configure end user connections according to the database access technology that you are using at your site. Connecting to Your Database with Connect ODBC Connect ODBC is a set of ODBC drivers—when you install it, you install drivers. Before you can use an installed driver you must create and configure an ODBC data source for that driver. 5 SPSS Data Access Pack Installation Instructions An ODBC data source must consist of two pieces of information: the ODBC driver to be used to access the data, and the location of the data that you want to access. To configure an ODBC data source: # From the Start menu, choose: Settings Control Panel # In the Control Panel, double-click ODBC Data Sources. (For Windows 2000, double-click Administrative Tools then Data Sources.) # To configure a new data source, click Add, select the driver that you want to use—the names of all Connect ODBC drivers begin with the text SPSS OEM—and then click Finish. The Create New Data Source dialog box appears. # To configure an existing data source, select a data source name from the list and click Configure. # On the Driver Setup screen that appears, fill in the necessary fields and settings. The settings available vary by driver. For a description of each setting, click Help. Connecting to Your Database with SequeLink ODBC Client If you have an SPSS system administrator, ask him or her about configuring SequeLink client. If you are an SPSS system administrator, see Getting Started with SPSS Data Access Technology (accessible from \Installation Documents\Documents.pdf on your product CD) and the SequeLink online documentation. Basically, to connect to data source with SequeLink, the database and the SequeLink server must be running. The SequeLink client must be installed on the computer that is accessing and processing data for the SPSS product. As an administrator, you must create SequeLink data sources and an ODBC data source on the computer. If you have not installed the SequeLink online documentation, you can install it at any time by running the SPSS Data Access Pack setup again. Updating Your Installation You can install additional components at any time by repeating the setup process and selecting the components that you want add. Note: Installing a newer version of a driver or client from SPSS Data Access Pack does not uninstall earlier drivers. Instead it makes the newly-installed software available to you. The newly-installed software must be manually configured; the configuration of your earlier driver is not transferred. If your earlier driver is working properly and meet your needs, it is best not to upgrade to a new version. Only update when you require support for a database that was previously unsupported, or when you require an enhancement. Uninstalling the SPSS Data Access Pack To uninstall components: # From the Start menu choose: # Settings Control Panel 6 SPSS Data Access Pack Installation Instructions # From the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs. # Click the Install/Uninstall tab, and choose SPSS Data Access Pack. # Click Remove. Note: Uninstalling removes ODBC drivers that were installed with the component—it does not remove the ODBC data sources that you have defined. The ODBC data sources that require drivers that you have removed will no longer work. 7
