November by the Numbers
43. New York City blocks in the route
covered by the Macy’s Thanksgiving
Day Parade.
3,699. Weight in pounds of the
world’s largest pumpkin pie, made in
Ohio in 2010.
46 million. Average number of
turkeys eaten at Thanksgiving.
A Beneficial Berry
Whether as a sauce, a snack or an
addition to salads, side dishes and
desserts, cranberries will probably
make an appearance at the holiday
table. Help yourself to a serving,
because this super food is full of
disease-fighting antioxidants, fiber
and vitamin C.

Secondary Soda
Don’t pour flat soft drinks down the
drain. Add water to leftover
lemon-lime soda or club soda and use
it to water your houseplants. The soda
provides phosphate and other
nutrients, giving your plants a growth
spurt. You can also add clear citrus
sodas to biscuit mix for extra flakiness
and a touch of sweetness. Use dark
sodas in marinades or as a meat
tenderizer. They also add tang to
homemade barbecue sauce.
Do It Now
To keep your home tidy and
clutter-free, don’t procrastinate. Open
your mail every day, wash dishes right
after meals, and put things away as
soon as you are done using them.
Free Movies
Staying in for the night? Instead of
paying several dollars to rent or
stream a movie, head to your local
library and borrow a film for free.
Many public libraries offer a wide
selection of new, classic and rare
movies and TV series.
Turkey Time
Dark turkey meat has more fat and
calories than white meat, but dark
meat is rich in iron, zinc, and vitamins
B6 and B12.
Memories Repurposed
If you have T-shirts you no longer
wear but are keeping because they
bring back good memories, consider
having the shirts made into a quilt.
Eat to Sleep
Did you know that certain foods
can help you sleep while others may
keep you up at night? If you want a
peaceful rest, choose oatmeal,
almonds, herbal teas, cherries and
dark chocolate. Foods that can leave
you restless include alcohol, caffeine,
processed and smoked meats, spicy
foods and milk chocolate.

Transform Your
Thanksgiving Table
As friends and family gather
around the dinner table this
Thanksgiving, expressing gratitude
and making memories will likely be
foremost in everyone’s mind, rather
than how pretty the table looks. But
there are many ways to create cozy
decor with simple materials and little
effort. Keep these elements in mind:
Fabric foundation. A table runner,
placed over a tablecloth or directly on
the table itself, instantly brings
elegance to any gathering. A stylish,
3 Things You Need to Know
For 45 years, preschoolers have
tuned in to “Sesame Street” to learn
their ABCs.
1) Airing in more than 120
countries, “Sesame Street” is the most
widely viewed children’s TV program
in the world.
2) The show’s format mimicked
1960s variety shows with its short,
funny, yet educational segments.
3) Until 1985, the adults on the
show thought Mr. Snuffleupagus, or
“Snuffy,” was Big Bird’s imaginary
friend.
Not Your Standard Sandwiches
When John Montagu, the Earl of
Sandwich, asked for a meal of meat
between two slices of bread, he didn’t
know he would create a new cuisine.
The popular legend says he simply
wanted to keep playing a game of
cards. The food staple named for him
was first written about in Britain in the
1700s, but experts say similar
handheld meals can be traced back
as early as the first century B.C.
The earl’s legacy lives on today,
since each of us eats an average of
200 sandwiches a year. Here are
some fresh ideas for what’s become a
meal mainstay.
Wake up waffles. Spread two
waffles with goat cheese and your
favorite flavor of fruit preserves. The
nooks of the waffles capture both the
creamy tang of the cheese and the
sweetness of the jam for a tasty
combination.
seasonal table runner can be
improvised from a few yards of burlap,
a curtain panel or even a scarf.
Center of attention. For many, food
is the main focus of the holiday, so a
small, tasteful centerpiece is all you
need to enhance your table decor.
Ideas include a small bouquet of
mums, gourds and fruits in a small
bowl, or glass vases filled with colorful
layers of dried beans and corn. Make
your centerpiece short enough so
guests can see each other across
the table.
A place for everyone. Handwritten
place cards bring a personal touch to
your table. Experiment with different
materials, such as patterned card
stock and scraps of fabric. If you don’t
want to assign seats, you can still
make guests feel special by placing a
small object—such as chestnuts,
pinecones, a sprig of dried berries, or
a pear, apple or gourd—at each plate.
Grilled mac and cheese. Double
the gooey goodness of cheese by
pairing two beloved comfort foods.
Prepare a traditional grilled cheese
sandwich, but along with layering
cheese slices between the pieces of
bread, add 1/2 cup of cooked
macaroni and cheese.
Hold the bread. Load up on extra
nutrition and save a few calories by
using vegetables in place of bread.
Lettuce is a common choice, but for
variety, layer meats, cheeses or
spreads between slices of cucumbers,
zucchini or cooked portobello
mushroom caps.
