Hallowitz, ND, MSOM, LAc The terms “folic acid” and “folate” are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Folate is a general term for a group of water-soluble B-vitamins, including folic acid. Folic acid is the fully oxidized synthetic compound used in dietary supplements and food fortification. Folates are various tetrahydrofolate derivatives naturally present in foods. Humans are unable to make their own folate, therefore it is an essential nutrient that you should be getting from your diet. Important sources of folate are leafy green vegetables, fruits, legumes, liver, eggs, dairy products and orange juice. Unlike any of the natural folates in foods, folic acid is a fully oxidized compound. It is not a normal metabolite (breakdown product) of folate and can accumulate and potentially cause problems in the body. Human exposure to this form was non-existent until its chemical synthesis (1943) and use in food fortification (1998) and dietary supplements. Folic acid is primarily available in folic acid-fortified grain products and folic acid-containing supplements. This article presents research that suggests that relatively recent synthetic folic acid fortification of white flour, rice, breakfast cereals, nutrition bars, beverages, most multi-vitamins and many other nutritional supplements, has lead to significant increases in cancer, particularly colon, prostate and lung cancer. High folate levels have been shown to prevent cancer prior to the development of pre-tumor lesions, but research is revealing that folic acid supplementation can promote the growth and development of existing pre-tumor lesions. Another concern with folic acid intake is associated with the accelerated decline of mental capacity in older persons. This might occur because consuming folic acid without B-12 can mask, or hide, a B-12 deficiency. The elderly are often known to have compromised B-12 levels, and, consequently could be at greater risk for cognitive decline. “The more we learn about folic acid, the more it’s clear that giving it to everyone has very real risks,” says researcher David Smith, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford in England, as quoted in the Prevention magazine article. Despite this new knowledge about the potential risks of folic acid, folates continue to play a critical role in promoting optimal health. In particular, they facilitate proper methylation for optimal genetic expression and lower the risk of neural tube defects and cardiovascular disease, both associated with elevated homocysteine levels. Whereas natural folates found in foods and other natural forms, now being added to vitamin formulations, are beneficial and important to health, the fully oxidized synthetic form of folic acid is not the ideal choice for nutritional supplement formulas and regular consumption. There are tests currently available which can help determine your folate status, including organic acid testing of urine samples and measuring unmetabolized folic acid in blood serum. See Page 8 or call Pilgrim’s Wellness Clinic for more information about the tests we offer. Dr. Toby Hallowitz is Pilgrim’s resident naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist, taking appointments weekly in Pilgrim’s Wellness Clinic and consulting in the Supplements Department. He tailors to each individual’s unique condition, rather than focusing on disease. The goal of organic acid testing is prevention. You will be able to identify dysfunctions related to nutritional deficiencies or excesses, and Dr. Toby can assist you in correcting them before disease begins to develop. C L I N I C Pilgrim’s Wellness Clinic offers comprehensive testing that can provide insight into nutrient deficiencies and/or excesses, causes of disease and prevention of health crises. Supplementation is often used to offset these factors, but how do we know we are getting the right nutrition for optimal health? We often dismiss health issues, such as lack of sleep, foggy thinking, joint aches, poor memory and re-occurring colds, when, actually, they could be signs of nutrient deficiencies in the body. sure whether your body is taking in and utilizing nutrients. Your body has certain chemical indicators (organic acids) that can alert you to potential health problems. Identifying these early warnings can help you make diet and lifestyle changes that could extend and enhance your quality of life. Organic acid testing is one way to mea- Nutrients are protecting agents for your heart, brain and other critical organs. The best way to get the nutrients we need is through our food, however, many of us do not eat a balanced diet. In addition, factors such as nutrient-deficient soil, oxidation and processing deplete the density of nutrients in foods. Organic Acid Testing The Issue Specialty Lab Testing For Optimal Nutrition The only true way to get the… Power of Nature Power of Raw Founded in 1999 by Judy Kay Gray, MS, North American Herb and Spice holds to the idea that nourishment from raw whole foods is the key to maintaining optimal health. Today this founding ideal serves as the foundation for more than 130 unique products, formulations that are highly nourishing and naturally powerful. Oreganol P73 It is no secret that oregano is considered “The Cure in the Cupboard.” However, not all oregano is the same. One of the cornerstones of North American Herb & Spice’s product line is Oreganol P73, an edible essential oil cold-pressed and steam distilled using pure underground spring water. It is the #1 oregano product on the market that has undergone extensive testing, and it has been studied invivo and invitro at Georgetown University and Micro Biotest labs. P73 Oreganol and its beneficial properties are safe for long term use and can be used both internally and externally. The Power of Oregano The phenolic compounds found in oregano oil have been revered since antiquity for their powerful health benefits. In addition to its topical antibacterial uses, Oreganol has also been shown to be effective as a digestive aid, free-radical fighter, pain reliever and rich source of a number of minerals, including calcium, zinc, iron and phosphorous. Quality & Research Throughout the years, North American Herb & Spice has exemplified quality in all the ingredients used to formulate its products. From the remote mountains of the Mediterranean to the valleys of the Amazon rainforest, North American Herb and Spice sources the finest fruits, herbs, and spices in the world. They are also dedicated to expansive research and education regarding the possible uses for spice, herb and fruit extracts beyond what has been handed down throughout the generations. And they never adulterate our products with fillers, chemicals, or solvents. North American Herb & Spice has developed not only the most unique variety of products in the world, but also a standard for quality second to none. Their mission is to educate the public on the powers of raw whole foods, as well as create a moral standard for the way we nourish our bodies. Try Oreganol P73 today! ference Experience the vibrant dif herb can this scientifically proven make in your health. Picking & Processing One of the most important factors in producing oregano oil is location. North American Herb & Spice’s wild oregano is handpicked by villagers in the most remote mountainous regions of the Mediterranean, ensuring impeccable purity and quality. This area contains rocks rich in minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. The pressing and distilling techniques used to extract the oils have also been used by the indigenous people of the region for centuries. After the steam distillation process is complete, the essential oils are tested to ensure the phytochemical markers are within expectations. The oils are then emulsified in an organic extra virgin olive oil, which in itself contains powerful nutritive properties. * Product statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
