Course description: Physics 51 is the second semester course in calculus based physics for science and
engineering students. Principal topics include electric and magnetic fields; Coulomb's, Gauss's, Ampere's,
and naraday laws. The conclusion derived from these laws lead to Maxwell's equations and the properties
of electromagnetic radiation. The course also examines dc and ac circuit theory, and properties of
capacitors and dielectrics.
In the exams, students are expected to know the definitions of physical terms. derivation of some important
equatiens, as well as solving problems.
Students are expected to attend every lecture (and earn points toward "participation").
Required text: Sears andZemansky's (lniversiQ Physics,I3th Edition, Volume 2, by H.D. Young and
R.A. Freedman (Addison-Wesley, 2008).
Laboratory: The lab must be taken concurrently with the lecture. There is no separate grade for the lab.
You must pass the lab (in this semester) to receive a grade for Phys. 71.
Emergencies and Evacuations If you hear a continuous alarm, or are told to evacuate by Emergency Coordinators
(colored badge identities), walk quickly to the nearest exit via stairways (at the end of each hall). DO NOT USE
THE ELEVATOR. Take your personal belongings, as you may not be immediately allowed to return. Follow
instructions of Emergency Coordinators. Be quiet so you can hear. Once outside, move away from the building. Do
not return to the building unless the Police or Emergency Coordinators announce that it is permissible.

Solutions to homework will be posted online, for two weeks, after it is submitted.
Learn the examples assigned thoroughly in every chapter before you do your homework.
Tentative Schedule: Homework is assigned from the textbook, and will be collected on due dates shown in table (to
be provided later). We don't accept late home work.

Do not hand in those starting with E (they are examples with solutions given in text). Hand in the rest, on time.
If you want to practice with more, try the odd-number problems (solutions at end of book) near those assigned.

Each exam will be based on problems similar to those assigned as lromework. Questions involve definitions,
derivations, and problem solving. A student can bring in one 3" x 5" card, with whatever the student wants to write
there. Furthermore, students are encouraged to bring in a hand-held calculator with memory.
