Policy Objective
This policy aims to minimise the spread of vaccine preventable diseases in accordance with the
current recommendations of the NHMRC.
Rationale
The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register records a child’s immunisation history and
provides an immunisation history statement to their parent or guardian. This statement (or an
approved exemption) must be provided by parents and guardians as proof of immunisation for
childcare enrolment (as per the National Immunisation Schedule).
The Education and Care Services National Regulations, 2011 require all children’s services to
maintain a current record of each child’s immunisation status. This requirement is set out in PART
4.7—LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE MANAGEMENT R162 (f).
The NHMRC provides recommended exclusion periods for children infected by or exposed to
vaccine preventable diseases. Exclusion periods are intended to reduce the rate of transmission of
infectious diseases by restricting contact with infected individuals.

Strategies and practices
At the time of enrolment the parent or guardian must provide proof of immunisation by
presenting the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register records a child’s immunisation history
(or an approved exemption). The parent or guardian must also provide updated records as per the
National Immunisation Schedule.
Where there is an outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease children whose immunisation record
is not up to date or who have an approved exemption will be excluded from the service in
accordance with NHMRC prescribed inclusion periods.
Where there is an outbreak of an infectious disease children with the infectious disease will be
excluded from the centre for the duration of the infection and/or until the disease is no longer
infectious.

Where there is an outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease or an infectious disease all families
will be notified as soon as practicable.

Where a child contracts a vaccine preventable disease or an infectious disease the parent or
guardian must provide a written clearance from a Medical Practitioner in order for the children to
resume attendance at the centre.
Full fees will be payable for the period of exclusion.
