27656 (v1) Demonstrate and
apply introductory knowledge of
music technology equipment and
techniques
MUSIC Level 1
Credits 4
What is it?

Demonstrate (knowing WHAT) and
apply (knowing HOW) introductory
knowledge of music technology
equipment and techniques (to use
Mixcraft and Sibelius)

“I don’t see engineering (mixing) as
a career anymore… it’s simply a skill
set of being a musician” – Charles
Dye (recording engineer for Ricky
Martin, Jon Bon Jovi, Jennifer
Lopez, Shakira and others).
Outcome 1 –
Demonstrate introductory knowledge of the
features, functions, and techniques
associated with music
technology equipment.

Sequencer/sequencing software
(a recording, editing, play-back
device or software)

Musical Instrument Digital Interface
(the USB keyboard powered by the
computer)

Digital Audio Workstation
MIDI – 1980s
What’s so good about MIDI – ability to
edit/alter/change what you have recorded
You can CHANGE the pitch, time, volume, sustain
and a whole lot of other aspects of the performance
History of MIDI

MIDI was introduced in 1983. It was developed in cooperation
between major music industry electronic instrument
manufacturers including Roland, Yamaha, Korg and others.
These companies got together to solve the problem of getting
different pieces of electronic music equipment to talk to each
other.

It is important to remember that MIDI transmits commands,
not an audio signal.

.WAV or .MP3 file is a digital recording of the actual sounds
made by something a .MID file contains (for instance) what the
composer did at their music keyboard. It keeps track of which
note (key) was pressed, when it was pressed, when it was
released, and how hard (or velocity).

A MIDI file is small and can be edited (including changing the
instruments altogether).
MIDI CONTROLLER – MIDI KEYBOARD

Midi controller is a device that generates and transmits MIDI performance
data. It’s both hardware (computer we use) (midi keyboard we use) and
software (Mixcraft or Sibelius software).

MIDI instrument has the capability of playing several different instrument
sounds simultaneously into separate channels

You can use a MIDI cable, or USB cable to connect a midi keyboard to the
computer for recording purposes
Connecting MIDI
OUT, IN, THROUGH

Out- sends digital codes that represent what is being
played on the instrument

IN- receives incoming MIDI messages

THROUGH- send MIDI data on to other instruments, a
‘repeater’ of data
USBUniversal Serial Bus
Definitions

DAW- stands for DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION (like computer with Mixcraft
software installed)

MIDI- stands for MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DIGITAL INTERFACE (like using midi
keyboards to record into Mixcraft)

MIDI transmit digital data (not audio) into the computer

See the difference between audio and midi data recorded below
MIDI SEQUENCER

A MIDI sequencer or
DAW is used to record,
edit and arrange MIDI,
eg Mixcraft

MIDI data can be
altered by pitch (move
it up or down), timing
(placement in the
music), velocity
(louder or softer), and
length (longer or
shorter duration)
