I.
DESCRIPTION
The VN1100 is a turbine-powered, single-engine, five-seat, multi-mission helicopter.
Originally called the FH1100 and designed to meet the U.S. Army Light Observation
Helicopter specifications, this helicopter offers rugged simplicity, high reliability, easy
field serviceability, as well as low acquisition and operating costs. The current
VN1100 incorporates numerous updates and improvements, including increased
engine power and performance, giving the helicopter far greater capability than ever
before. Additionally, all VN1100’s can be fitted with the latest “glass cockpit” avionic
systems.
The VN1100 is suitable for many roles, including pilot training, personnel transport,
tour rides, carriage of internal cargo, carriage of external cargo (sling loads), and
aerial observation (e.g. border patrol). It can quickly and easily be reconfigured for
these various roles, often without tools. The VN1100 is equipped with skid-type
landing gear, but flotation landing gear can be fitted to allow amphibious operations.
The design of the VN1100 utilizes modern, proven construction methods,
incorporating the latest material technology. The emphasis is on strength and
durability, while at the same time providing light weight and low manufacturing costs.
The design also allows for ease of repair in the event of damage in the field of
operations. The result is a rugged, dependable helicopter that can operate in a
variety of conditions.

FEATURES
A. Main Rotor
The VN1100’s main rotor consists of a two-blade, underslung-type of system
designed without the need for maintenance-intensive dampers or individual hinge
assemblies.
The main rotor blades are constructed of a stainless steel spar and bonded steel
skins for strength and durability. The blades incorporate weights at their tip ends that
provide extraordinarily high inertia, a demonstrated safety factor in helicopter
operations.
The unique and proprietary design of the VN1100 blade gives the helicopter
superlative high-altitude performance.
For convenience, the main rotor of the VN1100 folds easily. This minimizes the
amount of room needed to transport the helicopter. It allows for compact below-deck
storage on ships. For transport in aircraft as small as a C-130, the VN1100 needs no
further modification other than folding the blades.

B. Avionics
If desired, the VN1100 can be equipped with the latest “glass cockpit” displays from
Chelton Flight Systems. This utilizes the most modern technology for the Primary
Flight Display (PFD), Navigation and Aircraft Systems displays. This gives pilots of
the VN1100 the same type of cockpit instrumentation that they will see and use in
larger, more sophisticated helicopters.

VN1100
C. Fuselage
The fuselage of the VN1100 is in three parts: cabin section (front); center section;
and tail boom (rear).
The cabin section contains five seats and four access doors. It is fully glazed. There
is no center divider or bulkhead between the front and rear seats, allowing maximum
visibility for all occupants. Unlike some helicopters, the VN1100 suffers no speed
restrictions when flying with any combination of the doors removed.
The center section contains the engine, transmission, hydraulic controls, and various
related systems. Oil tanks for essential fluids are grouped together, allowing for
convenient preflight checks and servicing. The VN1100’s complete electrical system
is housed in a separate, easily accessible bay on the left side of the helicopter.
There are two panels that fold down from the side of the center section.
These provide both access to aircraft systems (oil tanks and electrical components),
and also function as workstands for mechanics/engineers. The large baggage
compartment and aircraft fuel tank are also located in the center section.
The tailboom is a semi-monocoque structure that attaches to the center section. It
houses the tail rotor and related components.

D. Cargo Transport, Internal
Cabin Interior (Seats Installed)
The rear seats of the VN1100 can be easily stowed. In this process, platforms unfold
from in the seat areas that create a flat loading area for internal cargo. Removing the
copilot seat allows even more cargo room. Large clamshell doors provide a 5-foot wide
opening for ease of loading.

D. Cargo Transport, External
When the need arises to carry loads that are too big to fit inside the cabin, the
VN1100 can still do the job. External cargo racks are available, and an optional
cargo hook allows loads of up to 1,500 pounds to be carried underneath the
helicopter.

E. Air Ambulance
The VN1100 can easily be configured as an air ambulance. Two options are offered:
a standard litter kit that allows the transportation of two stretchers; or a “Med-Pac”
unit that provides oxygen, suction and electrical service for patient support.

F. Amphibious Capability
Equipped with optional flotation landing gear, the VN1100 can operate from both land
and water. The float landing gear consists of two streamlined, multi-cell inflatable
floats and related hardware to allow the VN1100 to make water landings. The float
equipment is fitted over the standard skid landing gear, so operations from land (hard
surfaces) are unaffected.

VN1100
G. Servicing / Operating
There are many features of the VN1100 that set it apart from and above the
competition. For instance, for ease of servicing, the entire main cowling slides back
on rollers, exposing the complete drive train (engine and transmission) components.
Complete engine changes can be performed in as little as two hours. In addition,
access panels on either side of the helicopter fold down to become work stands for
the technicians or for preflight inspections. For ease of maintenance, behind these
panels the engine and transmission oil tanks are grouped on one side, and the
aircraft’s electrical system components are located on the other.
The VN1100 is unparalleled in ease of servicing and maintainability.

VN1100
H. Flight Controls
The design goals for the VN1100 are safety and ease of operation. Features on our
helicopter are usually only found on larger helicopters. Some of these features are
not available on other helicopters at any price.
Dual Hydraulic Systems – Hydraulically boosted controls make the pilot’s job much
easier. Every VN1100 is equipped with dual hydraulic systems for increased safety.
There is never a worry about a hydraulic failure, as there is in other helicopters.

I.
Cyclic Force Trim
A force-trim system for the cyclic control is standard on every VN1100,
something rare in a small helicopter. Just like on larger helicopters, this allows
the pilot to place the control stick in whatever position he needs, momentarily
press a button, and the trim system will maintain that position, allowing the pilots
to attend to other cockpit duties. The primary advantage of this is reduced
fatigue and workload.

VN1100
J. Structural Integrity
Conventional helicopters have cross-tubes that run between each skid, underneath
the helicopter. In the event of a heavy landing, these cross-tubes can penetrate the
fuselage, rupturing the fuel tank and causing injury to the crew.
By comparison, the VN1100 is equipped with an impact-absorbing torsion-bar landing
gear system that provides for complete independence between the left and right side
gear legs.
In the event of a heavy landing with the VN1100, the torsion bars will absorb the
impact and deflect the landing gear to the left and right of the helicopter, acting like
the suspension of a car. With this system, you not only save the crew from injury but
also save the helicopter from damage. It is a very attractive feature that by far
exceeds the capability of a crash-resistant seat only.
The VN1100 landing gear has been tested to forward touchdown speeds of 30 miles
per hour and vertical landing speeds of 390 feet per minute.
Removable ground-handling wheels can be fitted.

POWERPLANT
A. Engine
The VN1100 is powered by the legendary Rolls Royce 250 C-20B turboshaft engine
that produces 420 maximum horsepower. Like the VN1100, it has a worldwide reputation
for rugged dependability. Combined with our specially designed main rotor blades, this
engine gives the VN1100 outstanding performance. In standard configuration at sea
level, the VN1100 at full helicopter take-off power is still utilizing only 60% of the
maximum available engine horsepower. This provides ample reserve for operating
environments that include hot temperatures or high altitudes.
Rolls Royce 250 C-20B Engine
B. Fuel Consumption
Because the engine in the VN1100 is de-rated its average fuel consumption is only 22
gallons per hour, giving it three hours of endurance.
15

VN1100
V.
PERFORMANCE
The VN1100 has superlative performance at all altitudes.
As you can see, on a “standard” day the VN1100 can hover at 11,500 feet at its
maximum gross weight!
VI.
NOISE
The VN1100’s noise signature is among the lowest of all existing helicopters in its
class. It allows the VN1100 to operate without being heard from a long distance
away. The chart below shows a comparison between the VN1100 and other
helicopters in its class.

D. Overhaul Times
The VN1100 is designed so that the major components come due for overhaul at the
same time: 1200 hours. Operationally, this means that helicopters in the field do not
have to come out of service for the replacement of components at odd intervals or
inconvenient times. Scheduled maintenance may be planned more accurately.
E. Limited-Life Components
Long component life ensures economic operation of a helicopter. The service life of
the fatigue-critical components of the VN1100 helicopter varies from a minimum of
750 hours for the swashplate cyclic input ring assembly to infinite life for the main
rotor shaft and other components. The following table lists the finite lives as certified
by the United States Federal Aviation Administration for all critical components.
