Annie Justiss Office: (843) 792-1081 Fax: (843) 792-3674 Patient Instructions After Outpatient Knee Surgery Diet: - Resume your regular (high fiber) diet as tolerated. Use a stool softener if needed. Drink water/fluids. Medications: - - __________________ Take ______tablets every 4-6 hours, as instructed for pain (pain killer). __________________ is a non-narcotic pain medication. You may take up to ____________ mg ______ time(s) per day for ______ days with food. DO NOT take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (eg Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Celebrex, etc) with Aspirin or other similar medications. Resume preoperative medications unless instructed otherwise. Activity: - Rest and minimize activity the day of surgery. Elevate the knee on pillows, above the waist, while reclining. Apply ICE for 20-30 minutes every 2 hours when awake (or cooling pack as directed) for the first 2 days. _____ Walk with crutches if necessary, then discontinue crutches as able. You may bend the knee to tolerance. You may bear weight on the operated leg to tolerance. _____ Use crutches. Bear weight as tolerated in brace. _____ Use crutches. Bear weight with the brace locked straight for ______ weeks. _____ Use crutches. DO NOT bear weight on the operated leg for ______ weeks. _____ You may unlock or remove the brace when non-weight bearing. ***Exercise the calf by pumping the ankle for five minutes, five times a day. Perform straight leg raises 10-15 times, five times per day. Tighten/squeeze the thigh muscles as well during these exercises. DO NOT resume use of exercise equipment until cleared by your physician. Dressing Care: - Keep dressing clean and dry. You may expect some light bloody drainage through the dressing from the fluid that is placed into the knee during arthroscopy. If the leg is uncomfortable, you may remove the Ace bandage and re-wrap it more loosely. Remove all dressings 3 days after surgery and apply a Band-Aid over each suture. Re-wrap with a single Ace bandage until the swelling is gone. DO NOT remove the sutures. You may get the incision wet in the shower 3 days after surgery. DO NOT submerge the incision under water or rub the incision until healed. Follow up: - You should have a follow-up appointment in _______________. If you do not already have one scheduled, call (843) 876-0111 to make an appointment. Notify the doctor if you have fever over 101.5ºF, excessive wound drainage, severe calf tenderness, numbness in the leg, increasing pain, or any urgent concerns.
