Reproduction
There are two types:
Asexual
only involves one parent which produces identical offspring (clone of parent)
Sexual
two parents (male/female) produce similar but not identical offspring. Sexual
reproduction involves male and female gametes (gametes are sex cells).
Disadvantages
Advantages
Must find a partner
Produces variation in offspring
Takes longer
More likely to produce
offspring which can survive if
changes occur
All offspring are identical and
so susceptible to disease
Fast
Mutations of parents will also
be seen in offspring
No need for partner

Examples of Asexual reproduction
1.
Binary Fission
e.g. Bacteria
Two identical
daughter bacterium
Parent bacterium
e.g. Yeast
Budding
Newly budded
yeast cell
2.
Spore production
Millions of
identical spores
e.g. Fungi
Each spore
develops into
genetically
identical fungus
3.
Plants
(a)
Runners
e.g. spider plant
Runner (withers away
after clone is established)
Original
plant
(b)
New
identical
plant
Rhizomes
e.g. nettles
Rhizome
Original
(underground runner) plant
(c)
Bulbs/Tubers
New bulbs form and
old one withers
Old plant dies. Two
new bulbs/tubers
produce two identical
plants
