Inventory, Monitoring, Research Catalog 2/28/13 1. Topic Baseline Inventory of Invasive Mammal Species 2. Background There has never been a baseline or quantitative mammalian survey at Hale Pōhaku or in the MKSR. But we do know that mammals are present; as they have been observed during other surveys. Invasive mammals include feral cats and dogs, pigs, rats, mongoose, and ungulates; their overall impact on the alpine and sub-alpine communities are not known. 3. Purpose Determine a baseline survey of invasive mammalian species to clarify and prioritize future monitoring and management efforts. 4. Research Objectives Establish a baseline inventory on invasive mammal species in the MKSR and at Hale Pōhaku to determine population densities, abundances, distributions, habitat use, dietary and behavioral patterns, and impacts or threats of mammal presence to the alpine and subalpine regions. 5. Management Applications Potential uses of a Baseline Inventory of Invasive Mammal Species could: assist with prioritization of management efforts, guide effective control methods, and understand the impact of mammals on other native species in the alpine and subalpine ecosystems. 6. Comprehensive Management Plan (and Sub-Plans) Applicability a. Priority –to be completed b. NRMP Source – Section 2.2-65, 2.2-66, 2.2-67, 4.1-56, 4.1-57, 4.1-58, 4.1-59 7. Desired Outcomes Technical report summarizing project purpose, methods, results, etc. Identify management recommendations to address any existing or potential resource impacts. Provide a baseline data set suitably documented and formatted for use by other researchers and management authority. Documentation of mammalian trends (new species, seasonality, etc.) Prepared by: J.Kirkpatrick
