Zeus - Nadav
Statue of Zeus on stage.
Introduction: Make sure you're sitting comfortably and are strapped in tightly because we're travelling
(4M)
back in time to 776 BC and the very first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece.
Narrator:
(Seung Bin)
The Games were held in a village called Olympia and were held as a festival in honour of
Zeus, the father of the Gods.
Narrator:
(Linda)
The best athletes from around Greece took part and represented their city-states in a
variety of sports.
(Athletes enter stage in city-state groups.)
Narrator:
At the beginning of the festival, all the athletes had to swear an oath in front of a statue of
(Seung Bin) Zeus. They had to swear they had been in training for 10 months.
Athlete 1:
(Chris)
I solemnly do swear that I have been in training for 10 months. (Shows muscles to
audience.)
Narrator:
(Linda)
Welcome everybody to the very first Olympic Games. Let's meet the teams!
Spartans:
We are Sparta, proud and fierce. We love to fight and we're here beat down those
Athenians and win!
Spartans bow to Zeus and move aside.
Athenians: (In a posh voice with noses in the air) We Athenians are educated, fine and noble, we're here
to win but will do so honestly.
Athenians bow to Zeus and move aside.
Corinthians: We Corinthians come from the coast and are practical and productive. We are proud of our
honesty and we hope it will help us win.
(Corinthians bow to Zeus and move aside.)
(Seung Bin)
Narrator: Now we've met the teams ,let the games begin! I call all those for the chariot racing! Take
your positions please! (Chariot racers take positions)On you marks, get set, go! And they're off,
and just look at them go! Oh no, the horse from Corinth is refusing to budge. (Horse from
Corinth still on the start line) The Spartans have taken an early lead, closely followed by the
Athenians. Who's it going to be I wonder? The Athenians have nudged into the lead but Sparta
are looking like they might make a comeback. And it's Sparta who have it with 50 meters to go,
no Athens, no, Sparta. And it's Sparta who take the victory!
(Spartan team cheer victoriously. Athenians accuse them of cheating, Corinthians throw a strop at their
horse and athlete.)
Narrator: I call all Athletes for the Pentathlon. Prepare for the jump.
(Barbara)
(Athletes line up ready for the jump.)
(Chris)
Narrator: First up is Sparta, still glowing from their previous victory. Let's see how they get on with
this......(first athlete jumps) Not bad, not bad. Can Corinth beat that? They've had such an
appalling start to these games, let's hope they can keep their heads up. (second athlete jumps)
Hmm, not so good I'm afraid, oh well, better luck in the next event. (Corinthian athlete leaves
crying). Finally Athens, it's a tough jump to beat, here we go.......(third athlete jumps).......YES!
WHAT AN AMAZING JUMP!
(Athenian athlete does a lap of honour while the others look on shaking their heads.)
(Sinéad)
Narrator: I call all sprinters! Take your positions please! (Sprinters takes positions) On your marks, get
set, go! Sparta are the favourites for this one.....and they've all made a good start, even Corinth
but will they be able to keep it up?...No, I thought as much. (Corinth athlete collapses on the
floor). Surprise, surprise it's a two man race between Athens and Sparta AGAIN! Who's going to take it
to the line? It's very close, oh and I can't tell, what we need is some kind of invention to help us, we
could call it video replay - I'll have to get onto my friend Archimedes about that one.
(Spartans cheer victoriously)
Narrator: Well I guess the Spartans got that one.
(Sinéad)
(Mrigya)
Narrator: Now for the final event of the games, my favourite. Athletes prepare for the armour race.
(Athletes get ready on the starting line) Being a fighting city-state Sparta are clear favourites
for this race however, it must be hard to run with all that armour on. On your marks, get set,
go! They're all making a huge effort but as expected it's Sparta who've got that early lead, yes,
they've got this one in the bag. Oh fiddlesticks why did I make that bet with my friend??! I
should know better than to go with the underdog.
(Spartans let out a roar of victory and is congratulated by other competitors before doing a victory war
dance.)
Yasmeen
Narrator: On day 5, the events were over and the prizes were given out. The winners were given a
crown made from olive branches from the sacred olive tree near the temple of Zeus.
Yasmeen
Narrator: In third place overall, Corinth.
In second place, Athens.
And the overall winners, Sparta!
