Unit 10 Body Systems
Physiology
CardioPulminary System
Heart (Circulatory System)
Veins and Arteries (Vascular System))
Lungs (Respiratory System)
Objectives and Questions
• 1. Students will be able to describe the functions of the lungs.
• 2. Students can describe the flow of deoxygenated blood
from the body through the heart to the lungs.
• 3. Students can describe how gasses are exchanged within the
various structures of the lungs.
• 4. Students can describe the flow of oxygenated blood from
the lungs to the heart and back to the body.
• 5. Students can describe the basic constituents of blood.
Lung Function: To allow gas exchange ….so body can
Oxygenate blood to be delivered to the rest of the body and
to take CO2 from the blood (deoxygenate)into the lungs to be
expelled.
Diaphragm (muscle)controls breathing
diaphragm contracts & moves down during
inhalation (air in)
diaphragm relaxes & moves up during
exhalation (air out)
You breath in air through the trachea, which branches
into two bronchi…one to each lung. The bronchi
branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles and end
in clusters of alveoli where gas exchange occurs
through the blood capillaries.
 Primary Function of the Lungs is to provide
GAS EXCHANGE!!!!
Deep within the lungs are little air sacs called Alveoli
These are surrounded by blood capillaires where diffusion of gasses takes place.
**CO2 in blood(coming from the body through the heart) is diffused into alveoli
**O2 enters the blood stream from the aveoli (filled with O2 from breathing) (goes
to heart) to be pumped to rest of body.
Both these processes happen by DIFFUSION (high conc to Low conc)
 Breathing rate is controlled by CO2 levels in blood
 Oxygen enters blood by DIFFUSION
 Carbon dioxide leaves blood by Diffusion

Pulmonary VEIN brings OXYGENATED blood back to heart
Pulmonary ARTERY brings DEOGYGENATED blood to the lungs
Is blood ever blue?
No… always shades of red
Publishers use blue to represent blood with low oxygen (goes to the lungs)
concentration and red to represent oxygenated blood ( goes to the body)

4 Major functions of the Heart
1. Pumps nutrients and wastes
throughout the body
2. Pumps blood that carries gases
(Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen)
3. Pumps blood that carries hormones
(Endocrine)
4. Distributes heat…(Homeostasis)
If the circulatory system is like
a network of freeways, The
heart is like the major city.
Roads are like the veins and
arteries.
The Roads!
• Veins carry blood to the heart
(Highway going towards a major city)
• Arteries carry blood away from the heart
(Highway going away from a major city)
• The further away from the heart the smaller the
veins and arteries get
( Freeways become highways, become two lane
roads)
Capillaries: very small veins and arteries that connect
with the tissues and organs where nutrients and gasses
exchange.
( Surface streets and driveways)
Pathway of blood from body thru
Heart to lungs hi CO2 low O2
• 1. DEOXIGENATED blood is brought to the
heart from the body via the inferior and
superior VENA CAVA ARTERY
• 2. Flows into the RIGHT ATRIUM
• 3. Pumped to the RIGHT VENTRICLE
• 4. Pumped up the PULMINARY ARTERY
branches and goes into the lungs . Where gas
exchange will occur…CO2 out of blood, O2
into blood.
Pathway of blood from lungs to heart
and body. Hi O2
• 1. OXYGENATED blood pumped back to heart
from lungs via the PULMINARY VEINS into the
LEFT ATRIUM.
• 2. Pumped into the LEFT VENTRICLE.
• 3. Pumped up the AORTA (AORTIC VEIN) to
head and lower body to oxygenate the body.

The heart and vascular
system transport blood
around the body
Diseases
• Diseases of the heart and
blood vessels are the
leading cause of death in
the U.S.
– Arthrosclerosis- buildup of
fatty deposits on inner walls
of arteries; blood flow is
restricted
– Heart Attack: an area of
heart muscle does not get
oxygen cause an artery
leading to the heart is
blocked
