Populations
Protective coloration
1. Natural Selection_ - the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to
survive and produce more offspring.
2. Adaptation - a change or process of change by which an organism or species becomes better
suited to its environment.
3. Evolution- the process when the overall population changes over time.
4. Natural selection acts at the level of Individuals
5. Evolution acts at the level of Population
6. Protective coloration- Many animals, especially insects, are very well camouflaged against
visual detection by predators, especially birds.
7. Mimicry- the phenomenon whereby unprotected prey species (called “mimics”) gain protection
from predators by mimicking toxic or otherwise protected species (called “models”).
