The Study of Triangle Measurement: Trigonometry Math students learn about triangles from a very young age. They identify shapes, and then they learn to measure. They learn to use a protractor and measure angles. They learn the definition of sine, cosine and tangent and calculate these ratios to solve amazing problems. Trigonometry When students move on in math they study functions. Angles and their respective trigonometric ratios make beautiful functions! They display a periodic, or repeating pattern. Trigonometry & Excel You can use Microsoft Excel® with your students to create these beautiful graphs and investigate the relationships between the different functions. Sample Project This is a sample of what your students can create. Why Use the Computer Lab? Students can begin their study of trigonometry in a concrete way. Students are able to put the numbers generated from the calculator in context. When students create, they learn. Investigation possibilities are endless. This project is loaded with possibilities for critical thinking. Success in the Lab Have step-by-step directions available for students even if you know they are extremely proficient in technology and your subject area. Have a complete example ready, but work with the students as they are creating. A perfectly completed project will limit their discovery. Helpful Hints Have critical thinking questions ready for the students that work quickly. Specific Project Objective Part 1. Students will create graphs of trigonometric functions such as f(x)=sinx, h(x)=cot(x) & explore trends. Part 2. Students will verify identities using data. Pre-requisite Knowledge for This Specific Project Students should know the exact trigonometric ratios of reference angles through 360 degrees. Students must know (or be learning) how to convert radians to degrees. Students must know (or be learning) how to calculate cosecant, secant and tangent. Students should understand and use function notation. Materials Available Contact me: Cathi Albrecht Rockwall-Heath High School [email protected]
