A. Established Electives within Public Health and Health Education
PHHE 504 - Drug Education (fall, spring and summer)
Development and evaluation of curricula appropriate for school and other settings. Emphasis on
issues, techniques, and resources necessary for the health educator to interact within the school,
community, and home environments. Examination of theories underlying preventive and
rehabilitative substance abuse programs.
PHHE 506 - Sexuality Education (fall, spring and summer)
Emphasis on understanding values and beliefs concerning sexuality and on developing and
implementing educational programs in school and community settings.
PHHE 508 - Mental and Emotional Health (fall, spring and summer)
Study of personality traits and interpersonal relationships. Emphasis on development and
maintenance of positive mental and emotional health.
PHHE 510 - Death Education (fall and summer)
Study of death as an integral phase of the life cycle. Examination of values and coping behaviors
related to death and dying.
PHHE 533 - Principles of Long-Term Care Administration (spring)
Overview of long-term care services, personnel, and the roles of the administrator. Emphasis on
organizational management and operations control. Resident care issues, federal and state
regulations, and licensing and certification also addressed.
PHHE 537 - Assessment, Treatment, and Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Addiction
(spring)
Drug and alcohol addiction viewed from physiological, interpersonal, and cultural perspectives.
Treatment techniques and programs to prevent drug and alcohol addiction.
B. Some Electives from Outside of PHHE
GEOG 532 - Geography of Health (fall)
Geographic dimensions of health in local and regional populations across the globe. Topics
include disease ecology, infectious and chronic diseases, geographic mobility, biometeorology,
nutrition, development and health, geographic disparities in health, healthcare resources and
access, medical systems, concepts of health and place, therapeutic spaces, GIS and public health.
Measurement in vital statistics and surveillance data with statistical, geospatial and modeling
applications. Lecture and laboratory.
BIOS 610 - Food and Industrial Microbiology (fall)
Fundamental aspects of microorganisms (including viruses and prions) associated with foods and
the food industry. Topics will include isolation and enumeration of microorganisms in food,
microbial species that are important to the food industry, techniques for preventing and
controlling microbial contamination of foods, and procedures for reducing health hazards
associated with food contamination.
AHRC 628 - Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Disability (fall)
The impacts of illness and disability on the developmental, educational, personal, familial,
social, and vocational aspects of life. Emphasis on identifying the functional limitations
associated with medical conditions and environmental factors.
ANTH 565 - Medical Anthropology (spring)
Survey of interactions between infectious and parasitic diseases, genetic predispositions, and
specific cultural habits, attitudes, and beliefs. Includes cognitive systems as they relate to disease
theory in various cultures and examples of folk medical practices and beliefs.
SOCI 552 (formerly 663) - Women’s Health Issues (semester varies)
Critical analysis of selected health issues that affect the life experiences of women. Emphasis on
feminist theories and the intersections of race, class, and culture to interpret these health-related
experiences of women.
