Human Body Nervous System: carries messages and pain Synapse: what holds the nerves together CNS: central nervous system, it consists of the brain and spinal cord PNS: peripheral nervous system, it consists of everything else (synapse) Wherever a break is on a spine, the nerves only travel up to that point and they have no control of anywhere lower. Muscular System: movement, helps to manipulate the skeletal system There are three types of muscle categories: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. Skeletal muscles are voluntary, and cardiac and smooth muscles are involuntary Smooth muscle lines the digestive tract, skeletal muscles are muscles around your body that you can control and exercise Peristalsis is a muscle involuntary action- contracts small intestine, and the cardiac muscles are in your heart. There are over 600 muscles in the body Skeletal System: supports, protects, and provides protection -> Bones -> RBC (Red Blood Cells) , stores fat (there are 206 bones in the body The femur bone is the largest and longest and strongest bone in the body. Circulatory System: circulation of blood (veins, capillaries and arteries) There are 44 blood types: A, B, AB, O Respiratory System: oxygenating blood, breathing The wind pipe breaks into 2 pipes: bronchioles. At the end of the pipe, there are alveoli which are little sacs at the bottom Excretory System: removes waste and provides body with homeostasis (sweat and release of salt) Reproductive System: to produce offspring Endocrine System: glands, hormones (EX: thyroid gland, pituitary gland) Integumentary System: skin, protects body from damage
