Welcome to this year’s Prep School production of ‘Crusade’.
Our Director of Music, Mr. Drew-Batty and colleagues, Mrs. Foulkes-Arnold and Mrs.
Stamp along with the pupils have been working very hard since September to ensure
everyone is prepared and ready for the three performances which showcase the
musical and theatrical skills of pupils at Taverham Hall School.
This production has actually been written by Mr. Drew-Batty over the summer
holidays and I am delighted that so many people are here to witness the results of all
this collective endeavour!
I do hope you enjoy tonight’s performance and I would like to take this opportunity to
wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2013 on behalf on myself

It is A.D. 1212. Stephen, a shepherd boy
aged 12, from Cloyes visits King Philip of
France. He presents the king with a letter
which Stephen says came from Christ. The
letter asked Stephen to form a crusade.
The King does not approve but Stephen is
determined and leads a crusade of children
to rescue Christendom. He tells his followers
that the sea will dry up and allow them
through to the Holy Land. The children are
joined by a mysterious minstrel who calls
himself, ‘The Piper’.
By June Stephen has gathered a crusading
force of 30,000 children. The Summer is
unusually hot. Many of the children attempt to
make their way home. When the crusaders
arrive at Marseilles the sea does not part to
allow them through. They are despondent and
lack morale. Stephen is approached by two
rogues, Hugh the Iron and William the Pig,
who, after being tipped off by the Piper, offer
to transport the children, free of charge, to the
Holy Land in seven ships.
After a few days out at sea, the ships are hit
by terrible storms and two are sunk at
Sardinia. When the remaining five ships arrive
on the north coast of Africa the children
are sold as slaves. Stephen is angry.
Claudine, one of Stephen’s friends, is
separated from Stephen and Gerard, who
have to flee the clutches of a cruel
slave trader, Barooba. A fight ensues and
Gerard is stabbed. He is treated by a healing
man, Flarek, and survives.
4
700 are sold to the Governor of Egypt,
al-Kamil, who treats the children well.
Claudine is reunited with Stephen and
Gerard but they remain slaves. Several years
pass. Stephen protects the Governor’s wife
and children from a Saracen raid and,
together with Claudine and Gerard, is granted
his freedom. They return to France.
We hear of the ending of this story through
the eyes of Brother Gerard, one of only a
handful of the original crusaders to
return to France – and that
after 18 years of slavery.
The opening scene is a
narration by Gerard, as an old
man, who followed Stephen
to Africa.
