The WELLNESS FILE– Handwashing and Cough/Sneeze Etiquette
INTRO: Welcome to the Eastern Ontario Health Unit Wellness File, with Medical Officer of Health, Dr.
Paul.
Dr. Paul: Germs like viruses and bacteria can be spread through the air in tiny droplets when we cough
or sneeze. You can help protect those around you by coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or into a
tissue instead of your hands. After wiping or blowing your nose with a tissue, throw away the tissue and
wash your hands. With more on handwashing is Linda Cléroux, Manager of the Infection Prevention
program.
Linda Cleroux: Frequent handwashing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick, or making others
around you sick. But doing it properly is important. Wet your hands with running water. Then add soap
and rub together for at least 15 to 20 seconds. Wash the front and back of your hands, between your
fingers and under your nails. And finally, don’t forget to rinse well to make sure all dirt and germs are
removed.
EXTRO: For more information on this and other topics, visit the Eastern Ontario Health Unit online at
