Preliminary Treatment
Raw wastewater (sewage) is
brought in by large pumps
that filter out large solids
such as trash, rags, and tires.
Smaller solids, grit, are also
allowed to settle out of the
water.

Wastewater is sent to
settling tanks called
clarifiers where heavier
solids, sludge, sink and
lighter solids, scum, float.
They are then removed.

Secondary Treatment
Air and bacteria are added
to the water to release gases
and allow the bacteria to eat
the organic matter, before
going to another clarifier for
settling.

The wastewater is
disinfected by UV lights and
nutrients are removed that
are harmful to animals,
plants, and humans.

Solids Treatment
Sludge is heated in digesters
to kill microbes and then
sent to be dewatered.
Final Products
Bio-solids are sent to the
landfill or used as soil
enhancements. The treated
water (reclaimed) is
discharged in surface water,
used in irrigation and power
plant cooling towers.
