agenda & activities:
Meeting time and prior meeting notes:
Notes from our October 18th meeting were distributed and reviewed; Mark Davies invited
members to notify Ted Metzler regarding any revisions required. Ted Metzler reported
that his email poll of members did not recommend any clearly better alternatives to our
current meeting time. In view of end-of-semester and holiday pressures, we do not plan
to hold a December meeting.
Essay Contest:
It was discovered that an unfortunate misunderstanding produced inadequate email
advertising of the current Essay Contest (which is due to end in three days, on November
18th). This probably at least partly explains the null response that we received from
students, although we had hoped to find that the November deadline would improve their
level of participation in the contest.
We will re-issue the contest next semester, changing the due date to April 7th. We will
also make sure that the contest enjoys much better advertising. This will include use of
local papers (POC: Carla Hinton), outreach to students at the University of Central
Oklahoma, more in-class announcements of the contest, and consulting Linda Herndon
regarding email distribution lists.
Next Intelligent Design event (Jeff Schloss, Feb 8-9, 2006):
Discussion of some additional details of this event established the following plans:
-
A welcoming dinner for approximately 50 invitees will be held on Feb. 8th at the
Freede Center, during which Dr. Schloss will give a brief talk (approximately 20
minutes – Ted Metzler will communicate with Dr. Schloss regarding this request);
guests will include Advisory Board members, faculty & guests, and students.
1
-
Advertising brochures, through University Advancement, will be prepared. (Ted
Metzler has since furnished the requested information for these to Mark Davies.)
-
Meetings with students on the afternoon of the 9th will be arranged with Dr. Schloss
(in fact, this has already been mentioned in our initial communications regarding the
visit); this will include Ted Metzler’s class in “necessity, chance, and purpose,” which
is being coordinated with the Schloss lecture.
-
Lee Hester suggested that inviting some high school educators could help spotlight
Dr. Schloss’ balanced treatment of ID in an environment where it particularly
deserves attention.
Additional Spring Semester event:
A number of prospective speakers were suggested and discussed:
-
Mark Davies suggested that Dr. Elizabeth Price might now have more time.
Ted Metzler will investigate possibilities of inviting Ursula Goodenough.
Mark Davies urged follow-up of Dann May’s suggestion of Prof. Gunter, and links
with the University of North Texas.
Jon Cantrell suggested Karen Armstrong.
Outreach to German LSIs (July 16/17, 2006 AAAI-06 Workshop):
Ted Metzler reported on our successful bid to co-sponsor a videoconferenced workshop
at the annual conference of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, “AAAI-06,”
which is to be held in Boston in early July next year. He distributed copies of the Call for
Papers for this workshop, named “Human Implications of Human-Robot Interaction
(HRI),” and explained that it will aim to open dialogue between the AI / robotics
community and representatives from such areas as philosophy, theology, psychology,
and sociology. Dr. Wolfgang Achtner and Dr. Lundy Lewis are working with Ted to
organize this workshop, and Wolfgang is helping particularly with planning for the
videoconferencing links to Germany. Unused funds from our 2004 Supplemental Grant
Prize will be applied to the videoconferencing costs of this timely project.
Future Funding initiatives:
Time constraints did not permit significant discussion of this topic.
Outreach to church youth:
Ted Metzler reported on progress with production of the improved adult-level DVD that
we may wish to integrate with the youth-level educational DVDs being produced at
Sooner Robotics.
Library Acquisitions:
Ted Metzler reported that receipt of the next order of books will bring the total number of
religion-and-science volumes in our collection to more than one-hundred.
Website:
Ted Metzler reported on recent improvements to the GOOD STAR website.
