Transcript
+Medieval Period – 450 A.D.-1400 A.D.
-Catholic Church – The largest institution of the era. Due to the wealth of the church, it was the
main employer of composers, many of whom happened to be clergy (church staff)
-Chant (A.K.A Gregorian Chant) – Categorized and established (and in some cases even
composed) by Pope Gregory
a) Vocal – no instruments allowed in churches. This also helped increase the volumes of
sermons delivered to large crowds and provided structure to the religious services
b) Monophonic – latin word meaning “1 sound”. DOES NOT have to do with the amount
of people singing but with the amount of musical lines occurring at once
c) Religious – texts from the bible and from religious works are set to music to help
further deliver the message of the specific church services, most notably, the Catholic Mass
