.-Plant Pathology
PROF. LUCA LANGUASCO
COURSE AIMS
Students will acquire the knowledge necessary for handling the problems of crop diseases, from
disease diagnosis to the design of sustainable crop protection strategies.
COURSE CONTENT
CFU
Introduction to plant pathology
Basic concepts and classification of the diseases.
Plant pathogens
Principal traits of the plant pathogens (protozoa, chromista, fungi, bacteria,
fastidious bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses, viroids)
The infection process
Interactions between pathogens, host plants, and the environment. The infection
cycle (inoculation, penetration, incubation, evasion, and dissemination). The
disease cycle (monocyclic and polycyclic diseases), inoculum sources, means of
dissemination of the inoculum.
Plant and environment
Susceptibility, tolerance and disease resistance. Influence of the weather, soil,
and cultural practices on the plant-pathogen interactions.
Disease control
Actions against the pathogen: sanitation, prevention, therapy, and eradication;
legislative, physical, biological, agronomic, and chemical methods for disease
control; characteristics of the plant protection products and their use. Plant
breeding for disease resistance.
