Necrotizing Fasciitis Ishtua Alicea Overview • It’s a soft tissue infection that’s rare but can lead to DEATH and other life threaten causes. • Necrotizing can destroy the muscles, skin, and tissue. Symptoms • Small, reddish, painful spot or bump on the skin. • Center may become black and die off. • The skin may break open and ooze fluid. • The wound may quickly grow in less than an hour. Symptoms • Include general ill feeling, fever, sweating, chills, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and shock. • Without treatment, death can occur rapidly. Treatment • Powerful antibiotics (treat’s other bacteria) must be given immediately through a vein. • Surgery is needed to open and drain infected areas and remove dead tissue. • You are given an antibiotics • Amputation Causes • Many different types of bacteria cause this infection. • Starts when bacteria enters the body, through a minor cut or scrape. • The bacteria begins to grow and release (toxins) that: • Directly kill tissue • Interfere with the blood flow to the tissue • Break down materials in the tissue, which quickly spreads the bacteria • Lead’s to shock Test & Diagnosis How the skin and tissue look can help the doctor diagnose soft tissue infection. CT scans are taken. Tests performed on blood, fluids, or tissue from the area. Prognosis > How well a patient does depends on: • How fast the diagnosis was obtained • The type of bacteria causing the infection • How infection quickly the spreads • How well the antibiotics work • The death rate is high, even with aggressive treatment and powerful antibiotics. • Untreated, infection spreads and causes death Prevention > Don’t leave a minor cut untreated • Clean your skin after a cut, scrape Complications > Tissue damage • Spread of infection, shock • Loss of an arm or leg • Death When to contact a doctor > Immediately after:::: • Drainage of pus or blood • Fever • Pain • Redness • Swelling Hepatitis • Something they have in common is to wash your hands.
