Size and Scale of the
Universe Review
We use scale models because of size
of the originals.
The model helps us better understand
the universe.
What can we learn from this “model”?
The inner rocky planets are close to
each other.
The outer gas giant are farther away
from each other.
How Big is the Solar System?
What can we learn from this “model”?
The gas giants are much larger than the
rocky worlds.
There are two large and two small gas
giants and rocky worlds.
What would the planets look like if they
were the same distance as the Moon?
If Earth were the size of a marble,
Alpha Centauri would be about 50,000
miles away.
If the Solar System
were the size of an
Oreo cookie, the
Milky way would be
the size of North
America.
(A galaxy is a large body made up of
stars, planets, and clouds of gas.)
Each “star” in this picture is a galaxy, so
far away it looks like a star.
Until we had powerful telescopes, all
galaxies looked like a fuzzy star.

Our tour of the
universe ends here.
