Appointment Protocol for the Athens Clinic
Immediate care needed:
Chemical burns to the eye – Refer to the ER for irrigation
Penetrating injury – Refer to the ER if potential ruptured globe/metal or other
foreign body penetrating the eye or orbit
Sudden loss of vision – (woke this morning and could not see)
Extreme eye pain with decreased vision
Treatment needed within hours:
Flashes and spots in vision
Foreign body
Blunt trauma
Pain or redness with contact lens use
Patients that have only one good eye with ocular complaints
Postoperative patient (have a technician triage before scheduling)
Treatment needed within 24 to 48 hours:
Children with white pupil/Leukocoria/or poor red reflex
Recent onset of double vision or eye crossing problem
Anisocoria (change in pupil size)
Sudden onset of ptosis (droppy lid)
Photophobia (light sensitivity)
Distorted vision less than 2 weeks
Eye pain for more than 48 hours but less than 1 week (technician can triage)
Colored halos around lights
Broken glasses
Treatment needed within a few weeks: Sooner if appointment available
Gradual decrease of vision more than 3 weeks
Headaches not accompanied by other symptoms
Eyes itching, tearing or discharge
Mild redness for more than 3 weeks not accompanied by other symptoms
Masses on lids
Pediatrics – infants with tearing & matting since birth (possible nasolacrimal duct
obstruction) can be scheduled within 2 weeks in a check spot – if a complete appointment
is not available.
*If you are not sure about scheduling please ask one of the technicians to help or
take a patient call and have one of the technicians call the patient back.
