Arts students who have obtained:
either C3 or higher in Leaving Cert Mathematics (Higher) or A2 or higher in Leaving Cert Mathematics (Ordinary)
are invited to take the Honours Course MA180.

The honours course MA180 is also available through Irish. Is dona linn nach bhfuil na Cúrsaí 109 nó 120 ar fáil tré Ghaeilge.


Monday, 14th September in AM150, Arts Millennium Building at 1.00pm
Tuesday, 15th September in Tyndall Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Concourse at 10.00am
Thursday, 17th September in Dillon Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Concourse at 10.00am
Honours Mathematics:
Monday, 14th September in Kirwan Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Concourse at 1.00pm
Wednesday, 16th September in Kirwan Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Concourse at 10.00am
Thursday, 17th September in Kirwan Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Concourse at 10.00am

All First Year Mathematics formal lectures start on Monday, 21st September, 2009.

The foundation course is optional for Arts students.

The combination Mathematics (Honours) plus Mathematical Studies is not allowed.

However, either Mathematics or Mathematical Studies may be combined with Applied Mathematical Science provided no course is duplicated.

SECOND YEAR (MA280)

Those wishing to proceed to second year Honours Mathematics must normally have obtained Honours in First Year Honours Mathematics (MA180)

Students must consult Dr. Aisling McCluskey, 11 Distillery Road, before registering for this subject.
THIRD YEAR (MA380)

The normal prerequisite is a satisfactory performance in Second Year Honours Mathematics.

Third Year Honours Mathematics students in the Arts Faculty take courses amounting in total to 30 ECTS.


SECOND YEAR (MH200)

This subject commences in second year.

This is an undifferentiated programme.

The prerequisite for admission is a clear pass in First Year Honours Mathematics (MA180) or a sufficiently high mark in First Year Pass Mathematics (MA120), (as
determined by the Department).

Those who have achieved this prerequisite have been invited (by letter) to consider this subject.

Students may not register for this subject without the permission of the Department of Mathematics.

THIRD YEAR (MH300)


MATHEMATICS
ARTS FACULTY
APPLIED MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE (AS)
This subject is available only at Pass Level, and the prerequisite for admission to it is a pass in Mathematics or Applied
Mathematics in First Year.
SECOND YEAR (AS200)

Students take a total of 30 ECTS.
For each of the following pairs of courses, the pair must be taken together or not at all:
(a) MA203 + 204
(b) MA211 + 212
(c) MA237 + 238
(d) MM245
+ 246.

A student taking one of the pairs (a) or (b) or (c) must also take MA221. A student taking two of these pairs must take MA221 + MA222.

Admission to each course is by permission of the Professor of Mathematics or Mathematical Physics as appropriate.

Normally, only those students who have passed 1st Year Mathematics will be admitted to the Calculus or Algebra courses.

Only those students who have passed 1st Year Mathematics or Applied Mathematics or Mathematical Physics will be admitted to the Methods of Mathematical Physics, Numerical
Analysis or Statistics courses.

Only those students who have passed 1st Year Applied Mathematics or 1st Year Mathematical Physics will be admitted to the Mechanics course.
THIRD YEAR (AS300)

Students take a total of 30 units. For each of the following pairs of courses, the pair must be taken together or not at all: (a) MA301 + 302; (b) MA313 + 314; (c) MA337 + 338.

Students are not allowed to register for Third Year courses in the subject Applied Mathematical Science unless the appropriate Second Year courses have been passed.

A student taking one of the combinations (MA301 + MA302) or (MA313 + MA314) or (MA337 and MA338) must also take MA325; a student taking two of these
combinations must take MA325 + MA326.
