2-1: Multiplication Patterns
When Multiplying products of 10:
• Multiply the non-zero digits
• Write one zero to the right of the product for
each zero in the factor or factors.
When Multiplying a decimal by 10, 100, or 1,000:
• Multiply the non-zero digits.
• Count the number of zeros in the multiplier.
• Move the decimal point in the Multicand to the
right one place for each zero.
• Write as many zeros in the product as needed to
place the decimal point correctly.

2-4: Multiply Decimals
 Multiply as you would with Whole Numbers.
 Count the number of Decimal Places in both
Factors.
 Mark off the same number of decimal places in the
product.
 Factor- Number being Multiplied
 Product- Answer from Multiplication

2-5: Exponents
 Exponent- Used to express a number that is a product
of factors that are the same
 Any Exponent tells how many times to use the base as
a factor.
 Cubed= “to the third power
 Squared= “to the second power”
Example:
25= 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 32

25= Exponential Form
32= Standard Form
2-6: Scientific Notation
Scientific Notation- Expresses a product of two factors.
 One factor is a number greater than 1 but less than 10.
 The other factor is a power of 10.
How to:
 When given a whole number, move the decimal point to the left how ever
many spaces necessary to make the number between 1-10.
 How ever many spaces we moved becomes the power of 10.
 Drop the zeros of the first number to make it the first factor.

Ex. : Bernice has a collection of 90 stamps from Europe and Africa. Sixty
stamps are from Europe. How many stamps does she have from Africa?
90= E + A
90= 60 + A
